He knew people didn’t come here.

The old men had warned him.

But the axe fed him better than any tale. Deep in the forest it was quiet, too quiet: no birds, no wind. He struck the first tree without hesitation. Sap ran black, like tar, and something inside the trunk shuddered.

When he turned back, the path was gone. Only roots reaching for his feet, and faces in the bark, watching without malice. Only with sadness.

Can frequently be found skittering around whale falls if there is a nearby ungodly presence🦐🩸
