Hey all, I kind of lurk around here sometimes - I thought you'd enjoy this from the Minneapolis Star Tribune. I noticed it because it's currently the #1 most read article on their site.

I'm going to SOI in St Paul on Sunday, Ilia may have just sold me on upgrading to Stargazer tickets!

(Excuse any weird formatting, I'm cutting and pasting from behind the paywall)

Yuen: Ilia Malinin lost big. He showed us something bigger.

After a crushing Olympic loss, the U.S. skating star chose grace — a lesson he now brings to St. Paul with Stars on Ice.

By Laura Yuen

The Minnesota Star Tribune

Olympic figure skating brims with narratives about how to live your life. In American skater Ilia Malinin, we learned that it costs nothing to be a decent, gracious competitor, even while trying to nurse yourself back from a crushing defeat.

When Kazakhstani skater Mikhail Shaidorov clinched the gold medal in the men’s figure skating finals in February, Malinin could have hung his head. Even a tepid handshake would have been seen as sportsmanlike. Just moments before, the heavily favored Malinin had fallen twice during his free skate, tumbling from first to eighth place. It was a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day for the Quad God.

But Malinin sought out Shaidorov in the kiss-and-cry booth with a congratulatory embrace, tousling the hair on the back of his rival’s head. Malinin grabbed Shaidorov by the shoulders. Looking at him squarely in the eyes, he said, “You deserve it.”

As a youth sports parent, this is the story about Malinin that I’ll always hold up to my kids, even if he wins gold next time (and I hope he does). That short but meaningful exchange earned Malinin the Milano Cortina 2026 Fair Play Award, which honors exceptional sportsmanship during the games.

Now the 21-year-old is coming to the Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul on Sunday, May 10, as part of the Stifel Stars on Ice exhibition tour featuring women’s singles gold medalist Alysa Liu, Amber Glenn and other members of Team USA.

I spoke to Malinin by phone about mental health, the pressures of elite competition and what he wishes the media would stop doing. Our chat has been edited for clarity and length.

Q: How do you feel genuine happiness for someone else’s success, even when everyone thought that success would be yours?

A: It’s because I love the sport of figure skating. We all support each other. We appreciate each other’s values. In the end, it’s a healthy environment to encourage our competitors and help them achieve their goals, so we can progress the sport, as opposed to having it be a rival-on-rival situation.

Q: You’ve spoken frankly about how you weren’t mentally ready for the Olympics. What’s something people don’t understand about the pressures of competing at that level?

A: Some of my friends and family were saying to just approach the Olympics the same way you do any other competition. That was what I was trying to do, but in reality it is something completely different, something that I should have been more ready for. But in the end, everyone was kind of using me to produce attention — trying to make me the Olympic gold hopeful. That was not right.

Q: So you think people were building up this hype around you and that was unfair?

A: I had to do things that I didn’t want to necessarily do. It was a lot of media. They were pushing me to do things that benefit TV. They were using the attention I have, as opposed to letting the athletes shine in the moment, and putting so much unnecessary pressure on them.

Q: The tennis player Coco Gauff has talked about how athletes need more privacy, especially to decompress after a tough match. Do you feel like the pendulum has swung too far in broadcasting your private moments?

A: I think so. Their reasoning is that they want to see more personality, but the Olympics should be about the athletes. Even after what happened at the Olympics, they were constantly filming me even though they could have videoed the medalists. All they were doing was waiting for my reaction. There’s ways to avoid that and still get the right amount of attention for everyone.

Q: The media trades on proximity to celebrity. At the same time, you have offered us a lesson in humility and grace, and the cameras captured that.

A: Yes, but again, that’s a normal reaction. Even though my goal was to win the Olympics, that’s one part of sport: You can’t decide what happens. It really comes down to what happens in the moment. An Olympic gold medal doesn’t take away or give you much in value as to what you are as a person.

Q: How did you get into a healthy headspace to win the world championships, just weeks after the Olympics?

A: It’s simply how it is. That’s one of the hard truths about figure skating and most sports: Win or lose, you have to get up and keep going. This was the last competition of the season, so all I had to do was go out there and try. Not put too much pressure on myself — just stick to what I want to do and love.

Q: How is it different now, performing in an exhibition?

A: It’s a completely different environment. Stars on Ice is really special. You get to skate with all of these Olympic-level athletes without the pressure of competition. It’s purely our love for the sport and showing it to the world.

Q: Does a Quad God perform quads, even in an exhibition?

A: Some people do.

Q: I’m asking you.

A: It depends on the workload. If there’s a few shows, I’m sure we can do them. But if it’s a tough tour like this, sometimes we have to sacrifice what we want, so our body can stay in shape and not get injured. I may do some at the practice beforehand, for the Stargazers who come out before the show. I’ll definitely do some there.

Q: You’re starting a YouTube channel. What’s that about, and why now?

A: I’ve had the dream of having a YouTube channel for about six years, but I never really had the chance to get into it because I’ve been so focused on competing and training. But now I have free time and feel a little more open about my career, so I have more time to do things I actually love.

Are there any ‘older’ Ilia fans in the skating community? Also, is there a group chat that can be joined?

Hello! I am kind of new on this skating community so maybe I don’t have the full view of it, but I was wondering… are there ‘older’ Ilia fans/supporters?

I am asking because I’m mostly active on twitter and everyone there seems to be around 20 or less. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with it, but what about older fans in their 25/30s? I mean… do they exist or is it uncommon for this sport?

Also I would love to interact more with other fans to share opinions and our support/love for Ilia, are there any active groupchats or spaces to do so (other than reddit)?

I’m dying at him refusing to share them with Liza😂😂 that’s such a sibling thing to do. I do remember reading somewhere that he’s jealous of her cause she gets to spend more time with them so naturally the cats like her more.

Here is my attempt at a thorough, objective review of last night's SOI.

I must say that I was a little nervous for the cast after seeing their crazy night at NYC on 5/4. Alysa at the Met Gala, Madi and Alysa at the Gala afterparty, Ilia, Vadym and Emi performing at the benefit and then staying for the party with other SOI cast members...I was doing the math and it seemed almost improbable that they would make it to Rochester on time and perform. Well, they all showed up! I guess that's why they're the pros!

Stargazer: >!!<

During the Stargazer event in Rochester, Ilia and Alysa did not show up. I'm guessing they were catching up on their sleep. Amber and Isabeau did entertain quite a bit. Amber is such a dedicated skater and worked really hard during her practice. She was determined to land her triple loop and only left when she was happy with it. Andrew also entertained the crowd and showed some choreo tricks.

When the pairs/dance teams were practicing, Vadym and Emi really served the crowd. They were very entertaining and skated a lot. Seeing Vadym skate live was something else. I couldn't believe what a great skater he is. Emi is great too, don't get me wrong but Vadym skating level is on another level.
Danny and Ellie also rehearsed but Ellie looked a little off. It's hard to explain but didn't seem like her usual self.

The show:

Having first row, on-ice seats was definitely worth it. It was so incredible to watch the skaters be literal inches away from you.

The show started with the Fearless group number. The group was definitely more synchro and skated very well. When Ilia came out to do his part, the arena went wild. The whole night, watching Ilia was something special. You can see the passion he has for the sport. His facial expressions were priceless. He was singing along to everything he skated to and put 100% of himself into each performance.

Andrew - He really is a fantastic skater. Really loved both of his numbers.

Jason - Great entertainer and loved watching him perform!

Christina and Anthony - also great. There was one mishap when Christina was on a lift and had her skate on his leg, her skate was caught in his fabric. They laughed it off and nothing bad happened. I also have a theory that they might become the next Virtue/Moir where they keep us guessing "are they or aren't they a couple" They have great chemistry and are well-matched.

Vadym and Emi - OMG this couple blew me away. They are such an amazing dance team. Their speed, chemistry, skating skills, lifts, everything was sublime. I can't wait to see what's next for them. One of my favorite details about them was when the Bruno boys created a tunnel for them to go through.

Madi and Evan - they're a great dance team but for me, they're kinda boring. I don't know...I can't pinpoint it. But from the 3 dance couples, I was definitely impressed the least by them. They skated their Olympics long program and the gala program. It was great but not memorable.

Ellie and Danny - They decided to not skate their Pitbull program at all. I was surprised to see Ilia come out and skate his IWMFLU and realizing that it meant that they were skipping their performance in the first act. They did perform their Olympic program in the second act but they skated cautiously. I'm guessing the previous falls in other shows didn't help. They were still entertaining though.

Amber - OMG this girl can perform! She was definitely my favorite female skater of the night. Her Madonna performance still lives rent-free in my head. When she does the step sequence/choreo, it was magical. You can tell that she puts her heart and soul into each performance.

Isabeau - what a princess! Loved her performances. Her spins were mesmerizing and I loved watching her skate. Her Madonna program was my favorite and that costume! So gorgeous!

Alysa - I obviously loved Alysa but her skating definitely showed fatigue. I don't blame her! Considering that she had such once-in-a life event the night prior. She only did single and double jumps. I know it's a show, but it would be great to see triples from her! Just like Madi and Evan, I found her skating forgettable. Doesn't even compare to Isabeau and Amber.

Ilia - I have no words. Yes, I am an Ilia fan. But watching him live was something else. He leaves his heart and soul on the ice. His backflips are even more impressive in real life. When he sets them up, he's literally flying across the ice. I was holding my breath for them. He definitely knows how to work the crowd and shows so much emotion when he skates. I couldn't decide which number I liked more: IWMFLU or Eminem. During the Eminem program, he goes to the audience and high fives them. It was definitely worth getting those on-ice seats just for that. Both programs were amazing and I hope he continues to skate them. During IWMFLU, his speed and power is insane. I honestly dont know how it's humanly possible to skate like that. HIs speed during his spins in this program is also insane. Like, how does speed increase as the spin progresses ? Ilia was also one of the only skaters to actually do triple jumps. It still amazes me that he can just do it without going to the practice session.

Group numbers: Are they cheesy? Yes. Do I love them? Absolutely. The guys changed the choreo for the Bruno Mars song and they gave the ladies what they wanted! I almost got a rose from Anthony..but he gave it to the girl sitting next to me... ahh..maybe next time. My favorite group number was definitely the opening one to Fearless. It's great synchro and choreo and Ilia is amazing in it. He almost skates angrily. I also really liked their Olympic gold number. Amber's and Ilia's were definitely my favs. Ilia's voice costume is incredible! I did not expect it to look like that. It's so much more special in real life. Alysa skated her short program but it doubled as her individual one and the olympic one.

Overall, great show! I would definitely go to another one if it were closer. They still have half of the tour left. If you're on the fence , I say go for it. I would also say to get the Stargazer passes even if it's just for more favorable parking and merch shopping. You have so much more time in the arena and don't have to wait to get in. And you never know what you're gonna get. Quadcats? 4A? Don't get a case of FOMO!
