How Can I Get My Old Ripped Music That Is In My iTunes Library On My iPhone? (Please Read Below)

I spent hours and days and weeks when I first got iTunes ripping hundreds of songs off CD to my iTunes library. They are all still in there just grey and WILL NOT transfer over no matter what I try. I really don't want to have to do it all over again and waste time to have this happen a few years from now. Customer Service over at Apple said you cant anymore and basically told me to purchase all the songs (which is over 1000). I can not understand if they are in my library why they are grey and will not transfer to my new iPhone so I can play them in my music folder YET I can play them without a problem on my actual computer. I'm baffled and no matter what I try it just wont work! PLEASE HELP!!! I should add I have an HP Laptop not a Mac and an iPhone 17

Finding in XML remaining songs in library (excluding Apple Music playlists) without a stop time

I trim all of my songs to cut out the empty time at the end when there is nothing playing. The iTunes library XML file allows you to see each song and the stop time.

I have about 25,000 songs in my library I’m trying to find the remaining songs (171) that haven’t been trimmed.

I can get a count of how many have been trimmed by searching the XML for a count of the term “stop time” and then from iTunes get a count of the number of songs in the library. Then find the difference.

In iTunes I’ve been going one by one to see which I haven’t trimmed. I can’t see it in a column so I have to have a window open for each and keep hitting next.

Just trying to think of a faster way to see the names of the songs instead of doing it this way Is there a way to search the XML for a key that doesn't have a stop time? if it doesn't, the "stop time" key won't be listed.

new iPhone 14 Pro Max doesn't wifi sync to iTunes

So I had ask this to the Apple Help subreddit and I barely got any help from them. So I figured I'd ask here:

So recently I bought an iPhone 14 Pro Max, refurbished and squarely for music since my iPod Touch 7 was finally out of space.

While it works like a charm, the wifi wireless syncing feature doesn't work. Despite togging it and doing the steps that is said online to fix the issue, it doesn't.

Any advice on this problem? I run the newest update of iTunes on my Windows 11 and the iPhone is at the recent iOS update.

I Created My Own [Explicit] Tag Tool (iTunes)

Sure - anyone can use an ID3 tag editor of their choice and add an advisory tag to any of their .m4a files. But it can often prove tedious - especially when all your music is already tagged.

Therefore - I've created a lightweight app for Intel and Apple Silicon systems using OS13 and up. It's called: ExplicitTagger.

The way to use is is incredibly simple:

  1. Open the app
  2. Set the tag you want to add to your song
  3. Drag the .M4A or .ALAC file onto the app window

That's it.

This is my first app I've created. It's also not gone through the Apple Notary (i.e. verification process), so you might need to allow the program to run in System Settings. It's not groundbreaking by any means, but perhaps it can be useful for those of you re-organizing your music.

Adding that little red [Explicit] tag has never been easier until now!

Anyone else has to click sync twice?

For many years, with different PCs and iPhones, whether I want to transfer 1 or 20 songs, the first sync doesn’t sync, I have to click sync a second time for the songs to transfer to the iPhone.

This isn’t a complaint. An extra click doesn’t hurt me. Just curious if anybody else experiences that.

Anyway to view “other album artwork” on iOS?

when editing a song in iTunes, you can add multiple artworks right. I think this is really dope cause if you have your hands on say scans of the front & back of the album, the manuals and the disc too. you can add these & it’s like you have a digital re recreation of the physical product minus the need to engage with plastic. is there anyway to access this on iOS? or even maybe view thematically on Mac. to me, this is one of the best features. i know a lot of people don’t go far as to actually edit the song info but the ability to add multiple artworks is there for a reason ?

How I use iTunes in 2026: lossless rips, separate family libraries, iPods, and Plex

iTunes is still one of the best ways to build a lossless music library on Windows. It rips CDs automatically, organizes your files, and syncs to iPods. I have five separate libraries on one PC - one for me, one for my wife, one for my kids, one for Christmas music, and an archive. They all feed into Plex automatically. Here is how I set it all up.

Why I still use iTunes

I buy used and new CDs, rip them in iTunes to ALAC, and keep my own lossless collection instead of relying only on streaming.

I also still sync music to iPods, which are honestly one of the most nostalgic and cost-effective ways to carry around a portable offline lossless library. For roughly $50 to $150, you can get a portable lossless media player with a lot of charm, compared to modern Sony Walkmans that usually start much higher. The new players obviously have extra features, but if you mainly want offline music playback, old iPods are still hard to beat.

When I am not using an iPod, I use Plex to stream my music to my devices.

So for me, iTunes is doing three important jobs:

  • automatically ripping CDs to ALAC
  • organizing files into a clean Artist/Album/ folder structure automatically
  • syncing music to iPods

Plex then complements that perfectly because it expects exactly that same Artist/Album/ folder structure. So iTunes organizes the files, and Plex just picks them up with no extra work. You never have to manually sort or rename anything.

My hardware setup

This is what I use:

  • a recertified Western Digital 8TB WD My Book that I bought on eBay for about $150
  • an LG WP50NB40 slim external Blu-ray drive from eBay that the seller had already firmware-flashed so it can also rip 4K Blu-rays

The 8TB drive is just a very cost-effective way to keep a large media collection attached to my Windows PC.

The Blu-ray drive was just under $200, which is more than you need if you only want to rip CDs. I bought that specific drive because I also wanted to back up my 4K Blu-ray collection since discs can get scratched over time. If you only care about CDs, you can absolutely go cheaper.

How I organize my iTunes libraries

All of my iTunes libraries live under:

E:\Media\iTunes Libraries

I do not keep one giant library for everything. I separate them out.

Right now I have libraries for:

  • me
  • my wife
  • my kids
  • Christmas music
  • an archive library

That setup solves a few problems really well:

  • my wife does not have to dig through all of my music
  • explicit music stays out of my kids' libraries
  • I can keep special-purpose libraries separate instead of dumping everything into one giant mess
  • Plex works nicely because I can point each Plex account at the correct music folders and keep everything isolated

The archive library is especially useful when I buy a big pile of cheap CDs. I can dump everything into the archive first, then later move only the albums or tracks I actually want into my main library.

How to create a new library

To create a new iTunes library on Windows:

  1. Hold Shift while launching iTunes.
  2. Click Create Library.
  3. Put the new library under E:\Media\iTunes Libraries using the name you want.

Once the library is open, I immediately set a few preferences.

Go to:

Edit -> Preferences

Under General:

  • set When you insert a CD to Import CD and Eject
  • click Import Settings
    • set Import Using to Apple Lossless Encoder

Under Advanced:

  • enable Keep iTunes Media folder organized
  • enable Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library

With that setup, the workflow becomes very simple. Open the library you want, put in a CD, iTunes imports it automatically, ejects it when done, and keeps the files organized correctly under that library.

That is one of the main reasons I still like iTunes. It is old, but for this specific job it is extremely straightforward.

How Plex fits into this

Plex works really nicely with this approach.

Because each family member has a separate iTunes library and separate music folders, I can create separate Plex accounts for myself, my wife, and my kids, then point each Plex music library at the right folders.

That keeps everything clean and isolated without having to manually babysit playlists or metadata hacks just to keep family members separated.

The main frustration with iTunes

A small source of frustration with this whole setup is library switching.

Apple's only supported method is still:

  1. Close iTunes.
  2. Hold Shift while opening it.
  3. Keep retrying if the Shift key did not register properly.
  4. Wait for the dialog.
  5. Click Select Library.
  6. Browse to the correct .itl file.
  7. Open it.

That is annoying enough for me, but it is especially annoying when I want my wife or kids to have an easy time opening the right library before ripping a CD or syncing music.

I also found that making a shortcut directly to an .itl file does not solve this. iTunes does not respect which library you are trying to open that way. It will just reopen whichever library was last used unless you go through the Shift-launch method every single time.

The tool I made to fix that

Because of that annoyance, I spent hours reverse-engineering how iTunes handles library switching on Windows and built a small one-click Windows app to streamline it.

The app lets you:

  • add all of your iTunes libraries to a list
  • create new libraries directly from the app
  • single-click to open whichever library you want
  • create desktop shortcuts for each library so you do not even need to open the app itself

So now my real workflow is much simpler:

  1. Double-click the shortcut to open the library I want.
  2. Insert the CD.
  3. iTunes imports it automatically.
  4. The album ends up in the correct library.
  5. It is ready for Plex, iPods, or both.

If you want to streamline this same kind of setup for yourself, or just want to buy me a coffee for the investigation and the tool, I put it here:

https://ko-fi.com/s/203812a2b6

Why I recommend this setup

I recommend this overall setup for anyone who wants:

  • a straightforward Windows workflow for ripping CDs to lossless audio
  • a self-owned music collection instead of relying entirely on streaming
  • separate libraries for different family members or music categories
  • easy syncing to iPods
  • Plex integration for home streaming

If anyone else here is still using iTunes this way, I would be curious to hear what your setup looks like.

iTunes for Windows not detecting Wi-Fi devices

iTunes for Windows can't see portable devices (iPhone/iPad) after updating IOS

Windows 11/iOS 26.4.1/iTunes v12.13.10.3

iTunes no longer "sees" WiFi connected portable devices, so I have to connect via USB to sync. Bonjour is still working - printer and Onkyo receiver are still visible/functional.

Everything was working until very recently, probably until the 26.4 iOS update. ITunes does see my Iphone 12 mini, still running iOS 18.4 and syncs with it just fine over WiFi.

All devices are on the same network. Correct Windows firewall rules are in place (disabling firewall doesn't help). Enabling/disabling IPv6 doesn't help. Swapping my new TP-Link router with a Netgear running WW-DRT did not help.

The MDNS resolver is inconsistant, FWIW. In Powershell I get three responses: "does not exist" if mobile device has gone to sleep, or these, where sometimes there are two A records:

PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> resolve-dnsname iPad-Air.local

Name Type TTL Section IPAddress

---- ---- --- ------- ---------

iPad-Air.local AAAA 4500 Answer fe80::4f7:f5b6:3685:cfbf

iPad-Air.local A 4500 Answer 10.0.0.5

iPad-Air.local A 4500 Additional 10.0.0.5

PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> resolve-dnsname iPad-Air.local

Name Type TTL Section IPAddress

---- ---- --- ------- ---------

iPad-Air.local A 4500 Answer 10.0.0.5

iPad-Air.local AAAA 4500 Additional fe80::4f7:f5b6:3685:cfbf

Name : iPad-Air.local

QueryType : NSEC

TTL : 4500

Section : Additional

NextDomainName : iPad-Air.local

TypeBitMap : {0, 8, 0, 0...}

All the while , iTunes has no idea that the mobile devices exist.

Is there a way to recover music on my phone that I imported into iTunes from CDs?

iTunes randomly deleted everything I have imported over the years from CDs & I don’t have access to a desktop computer. I toggled sync button for music in settings & then tried to reboot phone using last iCloud backup but no luck. I know I should just switch to Spotify but it took a lot of time to download all of it plus I have a lot of money invested in purchased music as well. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

Can I export data from iTunes?

I use iTunes as my main music player and add music to my phone and iPod.

I want to export data for archival purposes (including play counts). I remember that you used to be able to export to CSV (or similar), but now, the only option is XML. Is there an easy way for me to convert this, or another way to export this data?

Basically, I want to make my own little 'Spotify Wrapped' at the end of the year.

iTunes fudging my play counts

HELLO

I still actively use iTunes to manage my MP3 library - it's the primary means through which I listen to music (which is a lot).

HOWEVER - recently when I sync my iPhone with my iTunes library on my macbook it starts sending my play counts way out of whack. Everything that I've listened to since the last sync gets some kind of multiplier on the plays. My most recent sync attributed 6 plays to every album that I recently added, all of which I know I only listened to once.

The archival nature of my library is a primary reason I still use it - love knowing how many times I've heard each song, how long it has been since I last heard it, etc.

Any idea why this is happening / how to fix it?
