Is quinoa actually better than rice for weight loss, or just hype?

I keep seeing quinoa everywhere in “healthy” meals. Tried replacing rice with quinoa in khichdi and noticed I stayed full longer.

But is there real science behind it, or is this just another health trend?

Share Your Opinion here:

From what I’ve read, quinoa has more protein + fiber and a lower glycemic impact than white rice, which might explain fewer hunger spikes.

In something like khichdi (with lentils + veggies), it becomes quite balanced.

Superfood Quinoa for weight loss. Check the Quinoa Khichdi Recipe (Indian Version)

Quinoa contains more protein and fiber and has a lower glycemic impact than white rice, which helps reduce hunger spikes and keeps you fuller for longer.

When cooked as khichdi with lentils and vegetables, it becomes a well-balanced meal—combining protein, complex carbohydrates, and fiber.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, traditional khichdi is considered a light, gut-friendly meal that supports digestion. Quinoa khichdi retains these benefits while offering higher nutritional density, making it ideal for those with slow metabolism, bloating, or digestive sensitivity.

Ingredients (1 serving)

  • 50 g raw quinoa (≈ 1 bowl cooked)
  • 2 tbsp split yellow moong dal
  • 1 cup mixed vegetables (bottle gourd, spinach, beans, zucchini, or carrot)
  • 1 tsp cold-pressed oil or ghee
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • Salt to taste
  • 2–2.5 cups water
  • Optional: ginger, black pepper, hing (asafoetida) for digestion

Method:

  1. Rinse quinoa and dal thoroughly to remove bitterness and impurities.
  2. Heat oil/ghee in a pressure cooker or pan. Add cumin seeds and optional spices.
  3. Add vegetables and sauté lightly for 2–3 minutes.
  4. Add quinoa and dal, mix well.
  5. Pour water, add turmeric and salt.
  6. Cook:
    • Pressure cooker: 2–3 whistles
    • Pan: simmer for 15–20 minutes until soft
  7. Adjust consistency (khichdi should be soft and slightly mushy).

How to Eat for Weight Management

  • Portion control: 1 bowl (50 g raw quinoa per meal)
  • Add more vegetables: increases fiber and satiety
  • Keep fat low: 1 tsp oil/ghee is sufficient
  • Best timing: lunch or early dinner for optimal digestion
  • Healthy pairings:
    • Buttermilk
    • Cucumber salad
    • Light sautéed vegetables (avoid fried sides)

What is your Dosha (or Prakriti or Ayurvedic Body Type) and what foods help you the most?

Ayurveda suggests that everyone has a unique dosha constitutionVata, Pitta, or Kapha (or a combination). Your dominant dosha can influence digestion, energy levels, and which foods make you feel your best.

For example:

Vata
Often benefits from warm, grounding foods like soups, ghee, rice, cooked vegetables, and spices such as ginger.

Pitta
Usually feels better with cooling foods like cucumber, coconut, sweet fruits, and leafy greens.

Kapha
Often does well with lighter, warming foods such as legumes, spices, bitter greens, and lighter grains.

I'm curious about the community here:

• What is your dosha type?
• Which foods make you feel the best or worst?
• Have you noticed changes in digestion or energy when adjusting your diet?

If you’re not sure about your dosha or want to explore Ayurvedic nutrition more deeply, I built a small tool that helps explain foods based on Ayurvedic principles:

You can explore it here:

It helps you understand foods, digestion, and dosha balance from an Ayurvedic perspective.

Looking forward to hearing everyone’s experiences 🌿

Best Yoga Practices for Weight Loss – What Actually Works?

Many people start yoga for flexibility or stress relief, but it can also be a powerful tool for healthy and sustainable weight loss when practiced regularly.

Some yoga practices that are often recommended for weight management include:

1. Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar)
A dynamic sequence that activates multiple muscle groups and helps improve metabolism.

2. Power Yoga / Vinyasa Flow
These faster-paced yoga styles can increase heart rate and burn more calories while building strength.

3. Core-Focused Poses
Poses like Boat Pose (Navasana) and Plank strengthen the core and support fat loss around the abdomen.

4. Twisting Poses
Twists like Ardha Matsyendrasana are believed to support digestion and detoxification.

5. Consistency + Diet
Yoga works best for weight loss when combined with balanced nutrition and mindful eating.

Why Does Ayurveda Recommend Eating the Biggest Meal at Midday?

Ayurveda strongly emphasizes eating foods that grow in the current season.

For example:

  • Cooling foods in summer
  • Warming foods in winter
  • Light detox foods in spring

The underlying principle is that nature and the human body follow the same rhythms. Seasonal foods are believed to support the body’s natural adaptation to climate, temperature, and environmental changes.
