More somewhere you can sit, work or read for a bit without loud music or heavy foot traffic. Ideally around Dalston / Hackney Central but happy to walk if it’s worth it.
Now that Zoë Garbett is Mayor of Hackney, what change do you think will come about?
Since I voted for labour mostly, this year I was thinking of voting for the green party. The results was surprising at least for myself since labour would win the majority of the time however the green party came out on top.
What changes do you think Zoe will implement in the upcoming future?
Not fancy places just reliable spots you can go to regularly without thinking too much. Any recommendations?
I think Starmer's government have been pretty bad but I'm going to vote Labour in the locals tomorrow to stop the Greens who, IMHO, appear to be playing student politics. Anyone else?
More protected lanes than almost anywhere else in the city. Reasonable connections across the borough. And yet the tension between cyclists, pedestrians and drivers feels more charged than it did when the infrastructure was worse. Which is a strange outcome. My theory is that better infrastructure has increased cycling numbers significantly which has created new friction points rather than solving old ones. Particularly around shared spaces and junctions that were not really designed for the volume of cyclists now using them. Is this just a growing pain that resolves itself as behaviour adjusts or is there a genuine design problem that the infrastructure investment has not addressed 😔
Today the 7th May local elections are being held; polls will be open until late in the evening.
I'm trying to canvass opinion online. How will people be voting?
Please remember, your vote always matters.
Green party wins majority (42 out of 57) of seats on Hackney Council - results by ward
hackneycitizen.co.ukAnyone got any good recommendations ? Preferably private, these cleaning companies do my head in 😅
To the lady that stopped next to me in Hackney (Mare Street) to check that I was ok as there was a homeless person wanting my attention- thank you! Everything was under control and the guy seemed harmless but I 100% appreciated you checking in on me. Have an absolutely banging Bank Holiday weekend!
The number of empty shops on Mare Street right now is really bothering me and nobody seems to be talking about it?
Walked the full stretch last week for the first time in a while and counted more shuttered units than I expected. Some of them have clearly been empty for months going by the state of them. And this is supposed to be the main high street of one of the most talked about boroughs in London. I know business rates are a nightmare and the pandemic did lasting damage that never fully healed. But there is something quite deflating about it when you actually pay attention rather than just walking past. Does anyone know what is actually happening with some of these units or is it just the same story of landlords holding out for rents that nobody can actually pay.
Suns out.... you know the vibes!!!
Anyone know where I can get a banging Sangria?
THANKS!!!!
OK so this is slightly unusual and very embarrassing, but I might as well try it. Hope this is OK here.
Your name is Romy/Rommy (?). We met late evening, both heading East on the Elizabeth line, and then chatted for a bit on the Mildmay line afterward. I spoke to you because you were carrying huge bags; turns out you were heading out for a hike in the Lake District early the next morning. You got off around Homerton, and I was getting off later.
We ended up talking surprisingly easily for a random late-night Overground interaction. I was feeling overly confident and maybe a bit too forward at the end, but sadly didn’t give you my number. I don’t want to give away too many personal details, so DM me if you recognise this... Or if you know who this might be about!
Edit: I tried posting this on r/london but it keeps getting automatically deleted! If anyone knows where else would be useful to post this, let me know...
Hello! I’m seeking feedback on what primary schools in Hackney are truly really good. I’ve heard some good things (eg. Gayhurst has a great rep) – but also less glowing things about even ones that are Ofsted “Outstanding”, which makes it hard to know.
Does anyone have any personal experience (as a parent, family member, friend of people with kids – anything!)
Thanks in advance for the intel 🩷
Buying a flat in Hackney: should we avoid council blocks?
As I’m looking to buy a flat in Hackney after years of renting, I wanted to ask about other people’s experiences living in council housing buildings.
My partner and I are considering excluding them from our search because we currently live in a council building and have had a pretty bad experience:
- the lift is often broken or faulty
- the stairs are very dirty — the “cherry on top” was finding a giant dog s**t there today
- we’ve found multiple neighbours smoking cigarettes and other substances inside the building
We’re wondering whether we’ve just been unlucky, or if these kinds of issues are common in other council buildings too.
Hearing extremely loud & scary helicopters now & it’s impossible to sleep 😭😭 what’s happening
I used to live down the road from a giant rosemary bush so I would just nick some fresh rosemary when I needed some; I've cultivated a lot of rosemary recipes over time. But now I don't live there any more and I keep forgetting to buy rosemary at the shops because mentally I keep thinking I can just pop a few doors down for it. Does anyone know any large rosemary bushes in the hackney wick area so I can recalibrate my internal map of rosemary
Hey people I am based in Dalston and often run 5 and 10ks around Victoria Park, canals, etc. I'd like to find a few people in the area that wouldn't mind meeting up every now and then for a social run, maybe a pint!
I am 30s software engineer, have a wide range of interests from board games, sci fi to bouldering and weights.
PM me if this sounds like something you'd be interested in!
