Paper white and peak brightness, do they affect ABL/FSB?

Seems there are a few people who believe that setting a lower peak brightness and paper white or average luminance helps with abl/dimming and even clipping. Logically it sort of makes sense, you’re kinda freeing up the power budget (NPC?), but I’ve seen others say this is not the case or in reality has an opposite effect, especially on full screen brightness.

Unfortunately it isn’t something you can reliably test by eye, since the ABL is pretty bad to begin with monitors.

Specifically for brightness limited oleds (eg TB400/TB500), is there any testing or proof to this claim? Would like to hear an expert or professional’s thought on this. TIA.

Discord HDR streaming fix

Easiest way is install vencord, search plugins for dev and enable "experiments" plugin, go to experiments in settings(at the bottom), search for HDR and enable both the go live HDR and HDR acc. setting. Fixed HDR streaming for me

If you dont want vencord just look up how to enable dev mode + experiments

CRT shader with BB and BFI

Guys, I am working on a comprehensive CRT shader for Reshade, which includes elements from the following:

  1. CRT Royale

  2. CRT guest advanced

  3. Sony Megatron

  4. Soop HDR conversion /before-after/

  5. CRT dusha

  6. BB CRT beam simulator

It is almost complete but end of the day I was very impressed with having integrated BFI with brightness compensation.

Currently this does work with VRR but the irregular flicker is annoying, best to use with 120hz vsync (true 120 fps needed). Should also work with higher refresh rate displays, but I have a 120hz one, so I cannot test. Framegen breaks if for now( not sure if fixable).

Games tested so far (with BFI) and working great:

Sifu, Crash, Cuphead, Hades 1/2, Hollow Knight, Planet of Lana 2, Lok Defiance:Remaster, Moons of madness, Cocoon, Pop: The lost crown, The rogue: Pop, Stray, Baja, Ori and the blind Forest, Jotun, Neva, Gris, Layers of Fear 2, Untitled Goose game, Dead Cells, Far:Lone sails, Mirror's Edge:Catalyst, Thps1+2, , Return to Monkey Island, Obduction, Clive Barker's : Undying.

Adding some gifs ( this is a CRT shader, so you will see CRT scanlines, etc., but you can turn off scanlines mask and everything).

For anyone who wants to test it out. Please take some time to disable other features you are not interested in via preprocessor to reduce performance cost. BFI variants can be enabled via the decay preprocessor (off by default). There is a 30 sec timer when having it enabled and you start a game to avoid to flicker from erratic fps and frametimes. Default method Fibonacci is what is used in CRT dusha and expect to see the least amount of flicker and the least effect in terms of clarity. BB and BFI methods are more effective, so test these, but again, do note you need to have very stable fps and preferably 120. Vsync absolutely needs to be on or you see a horizontal band flickering.

Diablo 4 HDR

Hello there,

my black levels on diablo 4 are very mid while HDR is enabled. Whats the common practice to fix that? Is installing reshade through RHI enough? Or do i need anything else?

MSI MPG 271QR X50 HDR mode help

Hey everyone, recently got my hands on the MPG 271QR and I'm confused by the EOTF boost mode which is supposedly set to target 1000 nits in peaks and dynamically switch to a pseudo TB500 mode when conditions are met.

When I go to calibrate the monitor in windows it maxes out at around the 700 point, should I set the small window brightness to 1000 and go to the full screen window brightness that I can see on the calibration. If I set the calibration to how I see it both the small window brightness will be at around 700 nits and full screen will be around 700.

Ideally I want the best of both worlds but I'm not sure if I'll be experiencing clipping by going past the 700 mark in EOTF mode.

Thanks!

Does HDR content get to specify each pixels exact nit?

Trying to understand a bit more about HDR works.

To my knowledge, sRGB content can't really "specify" a brightness, content can pick from 0-255 for each colour channel, but that only affects the actual colour, not display brightness.

With HDR, is the expanded dci-p3 colour gamut and brightness tied? Can content say it wants a colour value of 255,30,100 at 1000 nits, or is brightness determined by the colour value?

As an example, when testing Rift Apart, none of its colours went outside the rec.709 space, but could still peak to 1000 nits, implying they're not tied.

RenoDX Pragmata create artifacts with FGx2, it will be fixable?

Currently, In Requiem works correctly?? RE Engine needs Path tracing + FGx2 like a must! due to Raytracing have artifacts for not letting to use Ray Reconstruction. 😨

Thanks 👍

For those with a asus xg27acdng, what HDR mode do you prefer for gaming? HDR400 or Console HDR?

Just curious which you prefer and why. Thanks!

Banding in games skyboxes

I got a LG G5 and noticed that in some games around the sun and sky in general the colors have steps. A bit distracting once you have seen it. Is this an issue of the game or the TV/PS5?

The picture is an example for Cyberpunk. It is more visible when actually playing and moving the camera.

MO27Q28GR HDR calibration.

Quite confused on whats the monitors peak brightness actually is. When I run the Windows HDR calibration tool first time its says that the peak is about 1050, but if I run it again the cross disappears at 700. (Im running the TFTCentral settings, HDR Gaming. APL High)

And what should I put as peak brightness in games or in renodx. Its my first HDR monitor so I'm kinda lost. Any tips or help MUCH appreciated.

Do expanded color gamuts go beyond 255?

When it comes to sRGB, you have a few ways to map all its possible colours, RGB, Hex, hsl, all of which you can cleanly convert between one another.

How does this apply to say, rec 2020. Do the numbers go beyond 255? Does it still use 255 but with far more aggressive steps?
