I stumbled across this book from another post recently that completely changed how I think about food.

We’re so used to fridges, supermarkets, and next day delivery that I honestly never stopped to think about how people actually ate before all that existed. This book is basically a collection of old recipes that were designed to last months or even years without refrigeration. The same kind of food our great grandparents (and great great grandparents) relied on.

What surprised me most wasn’t even the recipes, it was the mindset. Everything was about making food stretch, using what you had, and not relying on systems that could disappear overnight. Reading it made me realize how dependent we are now compared to even a couple generations ago.

I’ve tried a handful of the recipes so far. Some are definitely outside my normal rotation, but a few were genuinely good and oddly satisfying knowing they’d keep without power or fancy storage.

It’s less of a cookbook and more of a little history lesson disguised as one. Made me appreciate how resilient people used to be, especially when it came to food. I wanted to make this post as a bit of a shoutout to the creators for putting it together and the person who shared it here a couple months back (I couldn't find the old post to go back and comment).

Here's the website I bought the cookbook from, it's a pretty niche book so I don't think it's available on any mainstream platforms - survivalsuppers.com

Reform win all Hartlepool Council seats up for grabs

Just one third of the authority's seats were up for election and each of the 12 went to Nigel Farage's party.

It means the council has been left with no overall control and could see a change of leadership at the authority.

There are now 15 Reform councillors in Hartlepool, with 14 Labour and seven Independents. Negotiations will now have to take place to decide who will lead the council .

Alright weird question maybe. Or dumb. Mods can delete, but it's bothered me my whole life.

Parents are working class, Durham born and bred. Ancestral line traces back here at least 200 years (yeah I'm into genealogy)

Been teased my whole life for a "posh" accent. Am not posh and neither parents are. I speak southern English, comparable to a London accent or something.

Honestly it makes me pretty self conscious

May ask my parents but sounds a bit weird

Hi all, I’m wanting to buy a house in Gilesgate DH1 near the big Tesco/Home Bargains but there’s no full fibre available; Ofcom estimates the top speeds for the address are 45-50mbps with FTTC.

I work from home full time in Teams video calls most of the day, and I like to game and stream movies/TV shows. I currently have 350mbps broadband with Virgin which isn’t available at the property I’m wanting to put an offer in at.

Does anyone have a solution for better, faster broadband? It needs to be reliable for working from home. I was wondering how people living there right now manage lol.

Or does anyone know if there are any plans to upgrade the broadband in Gilesgate? The Openreach website says no but…

Am I the only one?

Seeing Reform win Hartlepool seats and the council last year, then in Sunderland nearby despite the city undergoing regeneration... I know there's more to life here than politics but that's precisely why I'm upset that these people are representing us.

Some of the Reform candidates have come out with awful rhetoric which I don't want to repeat here, and I'm left thinking... how could these people be qualified to lead?

This isn't the Durham I know. What I mean is, every community on earth has its cranks, but it's different when said cranks are given a position of responsibility.

I couldn't imagine becoming a councillor and then using my councillor position to be absolutely horrible to people.

Politics is (supposed to be) about bringing people together and working towards solutions together. What Reform does broadly - not nationally only but quite often locally - is drive wedges.

There's more I could say about their harmful policies around our rights and protections, which could really hurt a lot of people if they find themselves in a pickle.

But even just focusing on the rhetoric, the image that Reform projects, it's just depressing to see them as our "representatives". Maybe I'm more prone to being depressed than most people, I suppose.

I'm also kinda angry at the country in general, that Durham is never a place to be engaged with. Everyone outside the Northeast that I talk to seems to think we're all in love with Reform, or that we deserve to be left in the arms of Reform. Nothing I say matters, the stereotypes don't change, and nobody cares. And that's why Nigel Farage will have us.

Reform is like the romance scammer on Tinder who asks you to marry them after 2 weeks of texting.

As for Labour, I do think some of their policy commitments will help Durham, but they don't have a story to tell. And so, Reform is telling a "story". Only it's full of toxicity and negativity and so I don't want to accept their story. I'm tired, boss.

Sorry for the long rant. Just needed to offload a little bit rather than bottle it up.

Has anyone used this dental comparison website before?

I came across a dental comparison website recently that lets you compare dental treatments and prices from different clinics.

It seems like a really useful idea because dental prices can be hard to judge, especially when the same treatment can cost very different amounts depending on the clinic.

Has anyone here used a site like this before, or this kind of dental comparison website specifically? Did it actually help you find a clinic or understand what a fair price should be?

Curious to know if people think this is useful or if there’s anything to watch out for.

I had an interview with them a while ago for a Cat Nanny/Barista position (doing everything from making drinks to welcoming people & looking after the cats etc.).

They said I’d be working solo shifts once I’d been trained. However, there were at least 3 members of staff there at the time, and the layout of the place made it impossible to keep an eye on the café while you were in the kitchen, so I’m curious - if anyone works/has worked there, were you expected to do everything on your own, and if so, how do/did you manage it?

Maybe there’s something I’m missing that I could consider in my future job search.

(I did ask the café after my interview but they didn’t respond to my email. Should have asked them at the time, but I have a slow processing speed cause of my autism so I didn’t think of it til afterwards!)

Thanks!
