Usage percentage of the First two games!

It’s beyond unacceptable at this point.What is the point of using paige off ball when you can't ensure enough touches for her.There should be a shot hierarchy in this system.I like what Atlanta did today.They were able to give their best offensive players a lot of touches.

Arike is not the problem. Here’s proof.

Through two games, the Wings have performed significantly better when Arike is on the floor than they have when she is not, so this narrative that the offense or the team as a whole is somehow worse because of her simply does not hold up to scrutiny. This fact is evident by looking at her on/off splits (via stats.wnba.com).

On court: 108.1 ORTG, 103.7 DRTG, 4.5 NETRTG
Off court: 91.7 ORTG, 114.3 DRTG, -22.6 NETRTG
Diff: +16.4 ORTG, -10.6 DRTG, +27.1 NETRTG

So, not only has the team been far better offensively with Arike on the floor (by 16.4 points per 100 possessions), but they’ve even been better on defense (by 10.6 points/100), adding up to a grand total of 27.1 points/100 better with her on the floor. That’s an enormous difference. At some point, you have to stop blaming her for every perceived issue with the team. She remains one of the two best players on the team and there’s a large gap between No. 2 and No. 3.

Also, there’s nothing wrong with her usage rating. It ranks 17th in the league among players that have played at least 20 minutes, which is right around where it should be. Plenty of her shots have come within the flow of the offense, and some of the ones that haven’t were the result of getting the ball dumped off to her late in the shot clock where she was forced to make something happen.

Azzi on Bench all Season

kind of confused by this not sure why they would even draft her at 1 if they want her to come off the bench, it makes it sound like she's the forth/fifth option which is really disappointing for her she's worked so hard and i'm confused on why they would draft her at one to be on the bench

Fever vs Wings defensive line ups breakdown

I did a break down for the wings vs fever line ups from a defensive lens. The table shows when the Wings has the ball, how did each fever defensive lineup hold up and vise versa. I used PPP, expected points and lineup match data.

Small sample size but worth looking at: the arike/paige/azzi/maddy/jess exceeded offensively and relatively fair in defense

Red = bad for the defense green = good for the defense

Li Yueru

Looks like Li Yueru is going to get traded again after the lack of playing time. Which I get. The other bigs on this team are a better fit.

Sad to say, this will be her 4th move in her short WNBA career. After her stint with the Sky, I've been following her and have her Sparks and Wings jerseys.

Where else in the league will a big like her fit? I'm not sure her speed and level of defense will fit anywhere else. I say this as a sad brown person with the utmost respect, I absolutely love Li 🥺 I could go back to watching her highlights in China, but she's too good over there too.

A Fudd-focused rewatch (and why everything is fine)

I rewatched the Wings-Fever game with special focus on Azzi's play. While she had a limited impact on the box score, I honestly thought she played well.

Defense

This is one big area that doesn't show up in the box score very well. The first possession she came in, she got a steal (pic 1). There was a CC drive that Azzi gave up too easily, but after pre-season foul trouble she's still trying to find how much physicality refs will allow. She did have a cheap reach-in foul later, but otherwise she played solid defense all her minutes on the floor.

Offense

Here's where I'm sure most fans were looking for more production than 1-of-2. While she was just spotting up a lot, there weren't a lot of opportunities because her defender was sticking to her. Which is fine, it opens up the floor for everyone. There were only two times Azzi was open but didn't get the ball: once on Maddy's made 3 (pic 2). Hard to complain on a made shot but that would have been a nice spot to swing the ball to the corner. The other was a wild drive from Sims (pic 3, Zaza also open lol). I think in that spot PB would have found Azzi, but Sims doesn't have the court vision and was probably trying to draw a foul she didn't get.

I did love that Azzi's made 3 was assisted by Jess, with crafty pass off a fake handoff to Paige.

Conclusions

Azzi is a smart player, she's playing good defense and taking the shots that come to her. She's mature and steady on both ends of the floor and her body language is good. Fernandez trusted her to sub her in after the TO when Fever tied the score 67-67.

Azzi will benefit from plays being run for her, but I think coach is being intentionally conservative about easing her in. Which is totally fine--as long as Wings get Ws, he can take as much time as he wants.

Fernandez seems to be a strong Xs and Os coach and will take advantage of Azzi's strengths and fit her into the team offense. I wouldn't be surprised to see Azzi starting later in the season, but whether starting or coming off the bench Azzi's production will increase steadily and consistently. As soon as Game 2.
