PSA: Tips and Tricks to smoothly progress through Torment levels.

I see a ton of posts on here about being "stuck" in T3, 6, 8, etc. Every class can smoothly progress on your first character to at minimum Torment 10 this way. You don't have Paragon levels/gear/mats to do all of the things streamers advertise as the "best" method for "x." The game is easier than ever to gear and progress, but it's also more complicated than ever how all of these systems work together.

Note: This isn't the most optimized way to progress an alt, this is for new and returning players overwhelmed by all of the mechanics.

Torment 1 - 4 (Paragon 1-100)

  • Look up a guide on your favorite build site, Maxroll/Mobalytics/etc.
  • Look for a Starter Variant targeted for fresh 70s.
  • Copy Skills/Paragon/Talismans/Mercenaries.
  • Look at the stats required on your gear and put Aspects on the best ones you can find.
  • This gear will be replaced many times, so don't worry about Masterworking/Tempering/Socketing during this phase.
  • Start looking for your 2-Set or 3-Set Charm bonus. Save all Unique Charms for crafting later.
  • Grind Warplan rewards and level up activities. Try to chain multiple in the same plan.
  • My favorite activities to focus early are Pits and Helltides. The rewards pay off later.
  • If you still need aspects, farm NMDs and Helltides. It's a numbers game and these have activities drop items from chests/elites/etc. UC/Infernal Hordes only drop rewards at the end of the activity.
  • The trader in the Merc hideout sells aspect caches for coins after Level 10 with a Merc. This can help speed up the aspect grind.
  • If you focused Pits, get Glyphs for your build to 25.
  • Once you can do the Pit 25 at 3 minutes or less it's safe to push Torment levels.
  • Suggest using an early game loot filter for your build. This will help identify valuable items and speed up farming.

Torment 6 (Paragon 50-150)

  • Keep looking for better gear and grind Warplan activities. Start transitioning to Mid/Endgame variant based on gear.
  • For the Paragon board it's better to sprawl across the boards as quickly as possible while following the guide. The general priority of nodes are Legendary >Glyph slots > Legendary > Rare > Glyph Radius stats to 40+> Stats. You don't need every Rare node on the way to filling out your boards.
  • Farm Lair Bosses for Uniques. Requires Lair Keys and Greater Lair Keys from Warplans and other activities. These stats are random now, so you'll likely need multiple drops before a decent one show up. You do not need a perfectly rolled unique to progress. Most uniques are inherently powerful and allow build synergy with just 1-2 good stats on it to get started.
  • Should have the Charm 5-Set by now. Start Cube rerolling them for stats suggested. Focus on the offensive stat. The 2nd stat is defensive/utility and not required. (This isn't always in the 2nd slot) Use the Craft Unique Charm recipe with those Unique Charms you saved earlier.
  • Grind required Glyphs to 51+.
  • Start Tempering items. These can GA. Roll a few times for a decent roll. DO NOT GAMBA FOR GA TEMPERS. You will quickly run out of souls and gold on ilvl 900 items.
  • Start Socketing. You probably have some useful Runes and Gems in weapons and jewelry are very useful.
  • If you find item level 900 items for the slots that use uniques, and you have some Enhanced Primordial Dust, you can start using the "Upgrade to Unique" recipe. DO NOT USE THIS RECIPE ON ILVL 850 ITEMS. DO NOT REROLL GAMBA FOR LEGENDARY GEAR. You don't have the dust yet to effectively do this unless you know what you are doing. The only exception I would recommend is removing affix on Blue gear to gamble Uniques for the rare or annoying ones like Astaroth/Bartuc.
  • Once you can do the Pit 60 at 3 minutes or less it's safe to push Torment levels.

Torment 8-10 (Paragon 150-225)

  • Continue refining gear rolls with better stats.
  • Grind Glyphs to 80-100+
  • If not already, start using a loot filter or build one. The filter has a category for Codex Upgrades which is useful. These are extremely flexible to only show useful items you want speeding up farming. Many filters have a STRICT version to only look for valuable Ancestral or GA items at this point.
  • Have 5-Set Charms, have Legendary Seal with +1 Slot, Unique Charm you need.
  • Now is the time you can start Masterworking/Tempering. Gear won't be replaced nearly as quickly.
  • You probably have a Mythic Tribute of Armaments by this point. Do these on the highest Torment you can speed run. The time is tight and easy to fail for some players.
  • Speedrunning T10 is often more valuable than slogging through T12. It's a loot game and if it takes forever to kill in T12, you're probably better off in 10.

Probably some things I missed. Feel free to add. Remember guys, this isn't "the most efficient way to x, or best way to x." Can you cube before I recommended in T6? Can you grind Infernal Hordes instead of Helltides? Of course! Use good judgement based off your needs. The point is, none of these things are really REQUIRED until a certain point, because some mechanics and systems are inherently stronger than others and often overlooked.

Happy hunting guys!

Edit: Adjusted Paragon Board priority, suggested Loot Filter early in T1-4, updated T8 Loot Filter to STRICT, added Temper suggestion.
Edit 2: Added Merc Trader bullet in T1-4.
Edit 3: Typos and updated certain bullets for clarity.

I crafted this last night. Waiting to transmog it.

Just made a barb to push content after my warlock could only go so far. Can’t believe I crafted this. Should I transmog?

OP WW Barb - I don't think Tidal/Deluge is worth it for most players

If you are already doing pit 130+ this post is not for you. But for 80% of fellow barbs, I do NOT recommend you go Tidal/Deluge OP setup. My gear is pretty solid (4k Str / 4k Crit Dmg / 85% crit). I've tested various combinations using these aspects and to summarize - these aspects ONLY kick in effectively when you can run Banished Lord's. They are being ran on the leaderboard because most people are abusing the double unique charm combo. If you're willing to give up being immortal then with banish it is nice dps boost. Otherwise just stick to the original variants such as Rob's earlier build(https://d4builds.gg/builds/whirlwind-barbarian-endgame/?var=4) or cliptis' build(https://mobalytics.gg/diablo-4/builds/barbarian-whirl-wind-barb).

Note - I am running Force of Nature / Dominance paragon board. And this board is still strong even with just 4 OP stacks.

My dummy hitting tests seem to indicate a 20% DPS loss converting over to Tidal/Deluge without banished. With Banished Lord's it is absolutely cracked damage for sure. Not to mention losing permanent 15% AtkSpd and 20% dmg from Ancients in order to run wrath of the berserker. If you wanna rely on bloodboil and dominance for stacks that shit takes 2 minutes to stack to 12. Feel free to chime in if you feel like you see a huge damage increase with this set up (no banished), it's not impossible that I've missed something.

Rob's newest videos are just kinda misleading IMO. Tidal+Deluge needs banished lord's to scale properly and the claim that you can "just run enduring faith" with it is just not true for most. I think his gear is too good for him to notice/deep dive.

What is the de facto best whirlwind?

I see so so many different opinions floating around. I know that this is more nuanced as there are different things one may want to achieve. But speaking in pure numbers for general endgame what is the most comfiest to play?

I died fighting T11 butcher on HC with selig build. Where did I go wrong?

So I got pretty excited. Put together a selig build and basically used robs 200t impossible build. 473 HP and 343 fury. I only have a low roll of resource on one of my charms. The rest were random stats.

I had 2 GA Lucky hit to resource on off hand weapon and ROSS. On one ring I had GA max resource Regen. GA Max fury Regen on Selig. I believe I was regenerating 24 resource. I was also running endurant faith in the charm slot.

Felt pretty strong, clearing T11 nicely and I wanted to go hunt for a better ramaldani. Killed the butcher the first time but the second time, I couldn't DPS him down and we went into his invincibility laser/hot lava floor which was what killed me. Rolling another barb right now but I though Selig is supposed to be immortal to everything except T12 meph laser beam.

Really want to understand where I went wrong before I gear another and make a dumb mistake. Kinda scared now cause it was so hard to gear one in the first place. Paragon 212.

Edit: ok so after reading a bit more, I realized I didn't have the earth striker aspect imprinted on selig. Only had anger management on my boots. So does this mean I don't have berserk uptime and was not receiving the benefit of 5 set bonus of crucible?

Juiced?

Looks like a solid roll but interested to know what you guys have gotten/what could be better about this?

u/Bothium — 1 day ago

I wrote down and compared the builds of the top 7 Whirlwind players on leaderboards, maxroll and Rob2628's build to figure out what to do myself.

Note: All builds using Predition, Selig's, Gohr's and Opus. All dust devil whirlwind barb. Obviously no max hp anywhere.

Some things I noticed

- All use anger management
- All use same 4 weapon aspects, 8 of them using Limitless Rage and Tidal on the two handers (more %) 1 of them has Tidal on 1H.
- Set Charms are all Max Resource
- Unique Charm is Banished Lord or Endurant Faith (OR BOTH if you have Mythic charm allowing them to use only need 4 set charms)
- Rank 4 is doing things very different to the other guys as you can see
- Gem Strength on 2H weapons is the biggest damage boost you can get basically. Main theme of season is going to be to keep crafting 2H weapons up and slamming them in the cube til you get it.

I didn't dig deep into the stats people are going for, I think we're all targeting the same thing and RNG is a huge factor here so I was just looking at the specific choices a player can make regardless of RNG rolls.

Edit: I said maxroll build uses Two handed sword specialization (bleed) so they can use Battle Fervor, I meant Disobedience.

why is everyone running polearm technique in expertise slot?

I came back after a long time, now i see everyone running polearm in the technique slot, but i don't undestand why.

don't you only benefit from the 1st bonus (lucky hit chance) when running it in the technique slot, since everyone uses the two handed mace as the actual weapon attacking?

woudn't it be better to run axe as you get a multiplier as the 1st bonus in the expertise?

did they patch it at some point and now you benefit from both bonuses even for the tecnique slot?

Rob's immortal barb vs dot damage..

So I have 534 hp, 400+ resource, crucible set with max resource mods, enduring faith charm, basically exactly his build: https://d4builds.gg/builds/whirlwind-barbarian-endgame/?var=5

Short of using iron skin endure's talent which prevents your hp from going below 1 for 3 seconds when I feel like im about to take some random burning damage or what, any and all dot will kill me outright as it bypasses resources and chews my 534 hp.

I am playing HC and this is by far way more stress inducing than a regular full hp build, it's a miracle my guy is still alive really. Watching Rob's stream it doesn't look like it's a problem at all, he just sits in everything and never see his hp move to dot dmg like mine.

So.... what the hell?

2 uniques in slot

Hi guys , was just wondering , I’m really confused on how a few people on the leaderboards have got 2 uniques but are still reaping the benefits of a 5 set bonus with 4 charms
