I’m a pre-medical student and I’m thinking about giving additional Mathematics privately to keep my options open for fields like CS/AI. I’m a bit confused about how this affects my academic identity. Will I still be considered a pre-medical student, or does taking additional maths make me an “engineering student”? Also, will both pathways remain open for me after this like will I still be eligible for medical fields as well as engineering/computing ones?

Another thing I’m worried about is that since I’d be giving the maths exam as a private candidate does that mean my college name gets removed from my academic record and I’ll be labeled as a private student overall? And for future things like CVs or job applications can I still mention my original college name or does the private exam change that?

Would really appreciate if someone who’s gone through this or knows the system can clarify.

My honest advise is if you are serious about your career (in this field) and especially your sanity then don't do it. The problem isnt the degree or the SoS/Courses themselves but the faculty and labs. My experience regarding the latter has so far been very negative.

The faculty is very old school and traditional most graduated from the same uni and it really reflects on their method of teaching. No innovation or use of modern tools whatsoever just the same windows xp k zamane k softwares. And they are very strict in regards to marking so forget your 4 GPA dreams. Not to mention that many of the lab equipment doesn't work.

Engineering is a degree which you learn practically in labs and you will only go so far if your labs are 20 years behind the rest of the world. Unlike CS/SE this isnt a degree that you can just self learn unless you have invested lakhs into modern hardware which most of us havent.

I have shared my personal experience. You can reflect on it and do your own research then apply here if you wish, but again my advice would be to not do it.
