Thinking about if I should get an Amiga or a Commodore 64 ultimate.

One of my hobbies involves fixing MS-DOS and Windows systems from the late 80s to the early 2000s. I wanted to branch out my interests into either 16-bit systems or 8-bit systems, and am a bit stumped at which to get:

  • I like the Amiga because it seems to be a very capable multimedia computer, but at the same time there's no indication of Commodore releasing a new FPGA Amiga and many remaining ones left are too expensive. Additionally, I have enough DOS machines which have some fantastic games, what am I getting here which is significantly better? I also feel like the workflow is weird, I have used an Amiga Emulator but the entire concept of frequent disk swapping was very tedious, especially when I'm used to MS-DOS hard drive technicalities.

  • I like the Commodore 64 because it seems like learning how to program it is an extremely useful and simple way to learn about Assembly and Machine code: For context, I am a CS major and took a class years ago dealing with x86 assembly and that felt overwhelming and complicated. I feel like despite the 6502 being quite primitive it's actually a fantastic way to learn about how any computer works. As of now, I'm learning how to do 6502 machine code with a small SBC and that's quite interesting.

  • I have a few PC booter games like Silent Service and some older comp titles which seem very primitive on the IBM PC. Did the C64 have better ports of these titles? For instance, any of the arcade ports like Outrun, or any of the Microprose games. Did these look better on a C64?

If I do take the plunge on a C64, should I wait for the C64 Ultimate Slimline or should I just get the regular one?

Just picked up an SX-64

I live in Asia and this thing is probably impossible to find elsewhere as I got it from a collector. I am absolutely in love with this piece of machinery and I want to make sure it lives a long life.

Things I’m planning on doing is recapping the whole thing, as well as purchasing the replacement keyboard membrane to ensure that it lasts a long time.

Already have a C64 wifi modem and an SD2IEC as well.

I’m a bit worried that the internal power supply may give out, but no signs of that thus far. I’ve seen listings of the CRT as well as the PSU on eBay though.

I want to ask — unironically this is my first entry into the Commodore64 world, what are things you would suggest I do apart from recapping so I can enjoy this for at least another 20-30 years? What are things that I could invest on?

On another note what are some apps/games that I have to try in your opinion?

EDIT: I had reached out to Ray Carlsen (the man himself!) and got this response almost immediately. Golden knowledge imo for everyone else out there:

There is very little you need to do to extend the life of your SX-64. Its internal power supply is a switch-mode type and failures are extremely rare. I set up a website decades ago to assist people in maintenance and repair of their Commodore hardware, and the SX is listed there with all the information I could gather over the years.

There are a few IC’s that, as in a C64, run hot normally and would benefit from the installation of heat sinks. I make those myself out of strips of tin and secure them with fast-set epoxy onto three chips, the SID, PLA and CPU, on the CPU board. I’ll show you a few photos. There is very little room inside the SX so the “ears” of the sinks need to be bent so they are clear of the opposing hardware.

I never agreed with the need to recap Commodore 8 bit hardware. The existing electrolytic caps may outlive us all. I’ve only had to replace a few on C64 motherboards in all the years I’ve done repairs on them. There are vendors who sell cap kits and that makes money for them so it will continue, but that’s it. The Amiga series computers do have caps that must be replaced, the SMD (surface-mount) electrolytics. Those caps leak electrolyte and damage the motherboard, so they must all be replaced before they cause damage. Such is not the case for 8 bit hardware such as the SX-64.

The disk drive in the SX is a standard ALPS mechanism and as such requires some occasional maintenance, head cleaning and lubrication, especially if the SX has sat unused for a long time. The original lube gets sticky like honey and the stepper movement gets sluggish. Extracting the drive mechanism is tricky but I’ve done it many times without a problem.

SX64 Keyboard Solutions.

So I bought an SX64 the other day finally. Waiting for it in the mail, no keyboard though. (The seller made a mistake in the item description, they offered to refund me but I didnt feel like passing the opportunity up, seeing as it was refurbished including the disk drive. I figured I can make a DIY keyboard solution until I can find one or get another sx64 that has a keyboard and then keep the second unit for spares or part it out.

I know it is possible to adapt a normal C64 keyboard to the SX64 with some wiring which I definitely think is an option.

I was thinking of making a dongle that connects to a DB25 connector that goes to a pin header, which connects to the C64 keyboard, and the other end would go to the SX64 I would use one of those existing adapter PCBs that are for doing the same thing with a 128D, but the pinout is different. (From what I know)

Maybe someone should make an SX64 version.

Another thing I considered or thought of was using an arduino. Unfortuntely I have no coding knowledge of how to make that work, so that probably wont work for me.

Last option could be to use a C=Key. From what I understand, it allows you to use a PS/2 style keyboard with commodore systems. They come in many configurations including SX64. This option may actually end up being cheaper than buying a working C64 keyboard or gutting a c64 for its keyboard.

I would like to hear some opinions, tips, reccomendations, or heck maybe someone else here has done something different that I haven't thought of that works. I have posted about this exact topic before but maybe something has changed since then.

Need Help Troubleshooting C64

Bought this broken because I wanted to learn about it. I’m not sure where to start and what chips to test. I’ve watched a few videos and read some guides but I haven’t been able to make a decision.

I’ve attached a video turning it on with the dead test and diag cart + no cart.

The only “repair” I’ve made so far was replacing and socketing U14 but I still get the same results/glitches.

The power supply looks to be original. I measured the voltage on the lines and it seems within spec. I think I’ll get a new one anyways.

Running the video signal through the RF modulator or the DIN produces the same issues.

I’ve let it run for 15 minutes and none of the chips feel like they’re burning up. The VIC get warm but I’ve tested it with another VIC - same issues.

The only thing that’s immediately concerning are the traces on the bottom. They’re pretty rippled but the continuity between each point seemed good. I’ll try to post more photos…

I also have a scope that I can use to test data lines. I haven’t found a good guide or data sheet to follow yet.

If anyone has any ideas what I should try next or what resources I can follow that would be greatly appreciated.

Just got this VIC-20, don't know anything about the VIC, but this keyboard layout seems very non-standard and I can't find any reference to it anywhere. The keys are all properly mapped though. Hoping that someone in here knows anything about it

EDITS:

The ROM is a socketed mask ROM which basically rules out this being a custom mod

Solution:

This poor VIC has had a C16 keyboard retrofitted on, many thanks to all of the forum members that contributed to solving this strange issue :)

I just dusted off my old C128 with 2 of 1571 Disk Drives after being in storage for over 25 years. The problem is the same with both drives. When trying to get a directory LOAD"$",8 the C128 says "FILE NOT FOUND" followed by a flashing green LED on 1571 drive. Please refer to the video.

Initializing the drive does the same with OPEN 15,8,15,"I":CLOSE 15. The head moves back and the forth and then stops with a flashing green LED.

I am using a new seriaI cable I bought via ebay. I've cleaned the heads with alcohol. Just wondering if there would be any suggestions on getting these drives working again?

3D Cube Demo for VIC-20 and C64

Got another old VIC-20 program back up and running. I also created a Kick Assembler listing for this as well, if anyone wants to play around with it.

Source code, .prg files, plus tape and disk images, are available on GitHub, here.

I have both a VIC-20 and C64 version of this. The VIC-20 version is the original, though. The C64 was a minimal port of the VIC version, just to get it running in a C64. But, the VIC version is the `real` version 👾

This is an interactive demo. So if you press the space bar during the main animation loop, you can use the keyboard to manually rotate, translate, and zoom in and out, etc. Pressing the space bar will spin it back up into auto-rotate mode again.

Hi all, I am looking for a cheaper alternative to the amiga 1200 because my broke ass is not willing to spend upwards of 1k for an amiga with NO accessories. Is there a way that I could build my own, or create a “legacy” device out of a raspberry pi?

Just found this trio sitting on the curb in my neighborhood for bulk trash pickup. It drizzled overnight but I don't think it was sitting in it because it was all still dry. Going to leave it in my car under the sun to help dry it all out just in case any internals did get moisture.

I haven't played with one of these since probably the early 90s at a cousin's house and even then IDK if it was the same model. Even if it's not working, it'll be a nice display piece for the retro media room.

Anyone remember "Empire Soccer '94"? Just booted it up on my Amiga 1200!

I recently picked up a copy of Empire Soccer '94 and fired it up on my Amiga 1200. I had never played it before—only read about it back in the day.

My verdict? The speed on the Amiga is absolutely bonkers! It feels more like Speedball 2 than actual football.

I’ve written a retro-review with a humorous comparison of the game's chaotic mechanics (like the invisible referee on Amiga, the tiny pitch, and taking the goalkeeper on solo-runs) versus real-life grassroots football.

Note: The article is in Norwegian, but it translates flawlessly if you open it in Google Chrome and use the built-in translate option.

Check out the full write-up here:

Did anyone else play this back in '94, or did you stick to SWOS and Kick Off? Let’s hear your memories!

I have wanted to get a Commadore computer for a while now, but I am stumped on if I should get the original 64/64C or one of the new ultimate versions? I am also hesitant because the price of the ultimate versions in CAD is quite expensive, and looking on EBay, the originals dont seem to be much cheaper than the ultimate versions. If I were to spend the money, which would be more worthwhile?

I remember my dad picking this up from the JCPenney shipping dept, but I personally haven’t seen any others in the wild.

Were these or are these still fairly common?

Has anyone had any recent contact with or successful orders from this company?

I ordered something in March that I really want, and have been waiting patiently. However, it is now pushing 6 weeks since I paid for the item and they haven't answered any messages I have sent via their website, emajl or FB messenger requesting order status.

Last time I ordered from them, it took almost 4 weeks, but my patience is running out regarding my latest order.

Edit: A lot of the replies indicate that people think I ordered a C64 Ultimate. That is not the case. My order was from commodore-4ever, not from the official Commodore site, and it is not an item that should take weeks to produce.

Bought a C64 setup listed as being boxed up ‘at moms place’ since moving in the 80s and being a time capsule. Wow is it ever. Found a heartfelt letter folded neatly in the manual likely to the repair company, and another letter to mom still on the printer thanking her. If this doesn’t evoke emotions… The 154I still has the protective plastic on its badge (slightly peeling). Don’t think I should remove the warranty sticker (dated 2 weeks after the letter from mom to the repair people) to preserve its story. Guess the chips in it will remain a mystery unless it needs repairs someday. … With the letter and sticker being dated late 80s this must have been boxed up to move just after repair and not opened again until 2026. Wow, the history on this unit… (I don’t think the seller knew about the letter when they sold/shipped it-I messaged them back).

Wondering why there was never a GEOS release for the Amiga.

I dont recall ever hearing about such a version and Google seems to confirm that.

Any idea why Commodore never worked with Berkeley Soft in porting it to the amiga?

Edit Starting over, since the comments are not responding to what I originally asked.

Perhaps I didnt wrote the post correctly, I meant when Commodore was working on releasing the Amiga 1000, so instead of creating Workbench, they went with GEOS.

So, some decades ago, I wrote this machine language monitor for the VIC-20 + VIC-1211A Super Expander cartridge, called Code Probe. I never released it anywhere, but I used it a lot back in the day to experiment with machine language programming.

I designed Code Probe to load into the VIC-1211A Super Expander's RAM, which made it possible to use the full 3K of RAM available on the native VIC-20 for machine language programs, which could then be run on the stock unexpanded VIC-20 without the Super Expander.

Recently, I've been tinkering with a lil retro computing and decided to release Code Probe on GitHub, here. While it was written in the 1980s, it has never been seen by anyone else but me since then. Which technically means, this is a new VIC-20 release, in 2026. 💪

I have a beautiful 1084S-P1 which has been working fine for many years. Eventually, the notorious power button gave up. The monitor has been off for several months. I finally replaced the power button and, when I turned it on, the white is gone and most of the screen is green.

I can't smell or spot any blown up cap... what should I be testing and looking for to get this fixed?

Thanks for any advice!
