Lao National Arrested in Bueng Kan, Thailand with 249kg of Meth

Lao National Arrested in Thailand with 249kg of Methamphetamine

Thai authorities arrested a Lao national on 2 May after intercepting a boat carrying 249 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine across the Mekong River, Thai media reported.

The suspect, identified as Tom Sasaengbong, 24, from Don village in Paksan district, Bolikhamxay Province, was detained in Bueng Kan Province. Authorities said officers tracked a long-tail boat crossing the river with its engine turned off before moving in to make the arrest. Two other individuals fled the scene by swimming back across the river.

Officers recovered eight sacks of crystal methamphetamine weighing a total of 249 kilograms, with two found on the riverbank and six remaining on the boat.

Thai law provides for severe penalties for large-scale narcotics trafficking, including life imprisonment or the death penalty, depending on the court’s ruling.

Investigators are continuing efforts to identify and locate other individuals linked to the case.

The arrest follows a separate bust six days earlier in neighboring Nong Khai, where authorities seized another 248kg of crystal meth smuggled from Laos inside durian and tea packaging. Together, the two seizures total nearly 500 kilograms, exposing the scale of drug trafficking along the Mekong River corridor.
