Bitch I'm a tank target train

The "tank target" is a rare piece of World War II training equipment used by the Amberley Home Guard. It was recently highlighted as a feature of the Amberley Museum's Home Front Weekend, scheduled for May 16–17, 2026

About the Tank Target

  • Purpose: These targets were designed to simulate a moving enemy vehicle. During the war, the Home Guard used them to practice aiming and attacking techniques with weapons like Molotov cocktailssticky bombs, or spigot mortars (Blacker Bombards).
  • "Out and Running": For the upcoming museum event, this historic target is being put back into operation. It is set up to move back and forth on a dedicated track, giving visitors a live demonstration of how local volunteers trained to defend the Sussex countryside.
  • Modern Use: As the museum jokingly notes, it is much safer to "aim" at this target with a camera nowadays than with the improvised explosives of the 1940s.

The Amberley Home Guard Context

The Amberley unit was a well-organized volunteer group in West Sussex. Historical photos from the museum's collection show these members equipped with a variety of weapons, including machine guns, mortars, and field radios. The upcoming weekend aims to recreate this wartime encampment, featuring vintage vehicles, uniforms, and period equipment.
