i3s - First day on Dunlop AllSeason 2

Just went for a drive. I previously rode the 19" turbines with Ecopias and honestly this feels like a new car. I don't sense the gravel changes, I don't feel every little bump in my ass. I don't hear the texture changes of the road.

I'll have to see about range, the car does feel heavier but sturdier.

The tire prices was 90eur for the front and 118eur for the back.

Android / Premium Retrofit MMI

OK, I'm seeing a lot of chatter, but not really the info I'm looking for specifically...

I'm interested in adding Android Auto to my 2015 REX. Premium Retrofit seems to be the general favorite in here, although BimmerTech has some fans, too. A few people have mentioned RoadTop, with decent results.

All I really care about is integrating maps on the screen and maybe a better music app. I could see adding the backup camera, too, as that would be handy. Ease of installation is also important to me, but they all look very similar. I don't want to have to worry about any of the existing tech getting screwed up by the process.

So, RoadTop is $200. Premium is $400 (plus $100 for the camera later). BimmerTech is $700. (Unbranded options are ~$150, but that seems risky.)

Am I missing some pros/cons to the different models? Is there another brand I should consider?

I am excited about the new i3 but is there any reason we don't re-label this thread I01 - I3 or something and have a new one for the NA0?

Just hit 100k miles!

This car is such a champ! It's such a joy to drive, and the best part is that it's problem free! I already put 10k miles on it this year. I average 4.6 on the highway with AC on with ease and ~5.0 if I commit to going strictly 55-60mph when needed. Still not happy with BMW's update that changed the car's acceleration dynamics bc of the motor mounts, but I can live with the extra safety net. I hope that BMW comes up with an updated version of this car under a different name, like i1 or something. Looking forward to at least another 60k miles with this car. Go i3 :)

Diagnosis sought from the hive mind:

2014 Rex (130k)

Driving home a few weeks ago the Rex turned on and was functioning normally for 15 mins, then suddenly (at 65mph) I'm kicked into neutral and get the dreaded "drivetrain: stop carefully" warning. And now I have an intermittent CEL (check engine light). I nursed it home by getting the Rex to start via the emissions testing mode.

I've continued to drive it and have been able to confirm that it will do this every time, however if I manually activate the Rex (via programmed radio key) before it reaches minimum battery level it operates without issue.

Summary: when the battery reaches minimum level where the factory programming would activate Rex it error's out, starting Rex before minimum battery level mitigates issue.

When I got the drivetrain error I saw these codes:

U1848

P0B3C

U0100

P1B2C

P1C79

P1AD1

P1E4B

Now I have these:

P0480

P14FA

P0480

Where to begin? Thanks for your thoughts...

Just got a 120Ah battery replaced under warranty

An i3s made in October 2019 did not want to get charged anymore. Brought it to a dealership on 2/4 with an almost depleted HV battery. They first pointed out that the 12V battery was dying (apparently it was still an original one that lasted 75k miles) but eventually agreed that the HV battery needs to be inspected. Of course they wanted almost $3k just to drop the battery and test the cells, which I had approved. They gave me a new i4 as a loaner. By 2/17 they got an approval from Germany to replace everything under warranty. Before that they thought that maybe only a faulty cell, that they found, can be replaced. The car was ready by 4/15, so it takes almost two months to get the parts delivered to California. There was zero arguing or excuses, just brief professional communications with a manager.

In the meantime the 12V battery died completely, and they could not start the car. I refused a $600 replacement charge, ordered a $130 Energizer battery from Amazon, received it next morning (it arrived fully charged) and came to the dealership. They let me in to the parking lot to replace it myself and then I was gone. $0 out of pocket, invoice attached.

For the last three years the car was driven >70 miles a workday, and DC fast charged from ~50% to 100%. Frequently driven with the gas pedal on the floor, so one may say the battery had a difficult life. The battery was degrading over the last year or so, the battery capacity was around 33kWh last time I checked before it died.

I have yet to see how the new battery is doing. When I picked the car it was only charged to ~90%, and the first 100 miles got it depleted to 25%. So I was not very impressed. I am slowly charging it at L2 while typing, maybe the first balancing will improve it.

Since the invoice shows all zeros, I only got a comment from the manager: $55k invoiced to OEM, and for a customer it would have been $60k. I have no means to verify that, but it seems to agree with a recent Recharged article estimate.

Hypermiling Mods?

Obviously AI but I was curious, if covering rear wheel arches would net any gains. It seems like an easy mod. Also, maybe aero covers on the wheels themselves?

Currently getting 4.4m/wh, 70F temps with no hvac running. Was getting barely 3m/wh in 30F with heat on low.

Current mods: ast lowering springs and 195/55/20 momos. Of course if I had the lighweight pizza cutter wheels, I might get better mpge but 75% of my commute on highway so I highly prefer stability and comfort of wider tires.

Question/advice for those that added Carplay/ Android Auto to NBT

Hello everyone I just recently purchased a 2018 i3S REX with the small screen NBT. Looking to upgrade the screen and add CP/AA.

Definitely did a lot of research into the many options available but figured it would help to reach out and ask directly to those that have done this upgrade to theirs.

The Bimmertech stuff is very expensive but seems to be highly regarded.

I also see these but feel like it's too good to be true:

Looking forward to seeing what the community has to say!

Spare wheel set (factory) in Michigan

Hey guys, I sold my i3 a while back and I still have this spare set of factory wheels. The 19" tires dont have any life in them but the wheels are in good shape. Ill pass them off for cheap to get em off my hands and into the hands of someone that can use them. Im in the metro detroit area.

Can someone comment on this 2015 as to value and how to tell if the battery is shot

And cost to replace the battery if necessary and things like that? I figure an EV in need of battery replacement would be essentially worthless. I am interested in one for very short commuting and around town use so don't need much range actually. Here is the link:

Cup holders?

I’m new to this sub, but I’ve already seen several references to the cup holders on the i3, almost like it’s becoming a meme. What am I missing here? I feel left out.

Did anyone regret not getting the REx version?

I’m debating between BEV and REx, and this decision is harder than I expected

Part of me likes the simplicity of full electric, fewer moving parts, less to worry about. But the idea of having that backup engine for longer trips is kinda reassuring

At the same time, I’ve heard mixed things about maintenance and reliability on the REx.

For those who chose one over the other:

  • do you feel like you made the right call?
  • any regrets either way?

Should I buy a used I3?

Ive been looking at the i3 for a year now. I have a car but i feel like this car is special and will be an unheralded classic in years to come. Is it a car I can buy and use very occasionally or will it cost me a fortune after 100k miles in tiny BMW parts?

Was looking at some of the crazy cheap 2014/15 models with rex. Should I wait and get the 2018-2020 in a few years.

Automatic lights not working

Hi, A few weeks ago the automatic lights on our I3 started to work intermittently.
It's now failing to turn the lights on at all ( we live in Norway where side lights are required ( there are also lots of tunnels!))
I had assumed it was the sensor and was arranging for the car to go to our local garage to get the sensor changed.
But I've realised that the rain sensor is still working, I thought it was the same sensor?

Has anyone else experienced this? Is it still likely to be the sensor?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Resolved: Severe swaying / fishtailing issue reported yesterday

I knew I wasn't crazy and that something was definitely wrong. Last night I was able to visually inspect without removing the wheels. Spotted the broken passenger side rear control arm.

I'll go ahead and obviously replace the left rear control arm at the same time. Glad I got to the bottom of this because I was hoping this wasn't the way the car handled normally. Cuz that was going to be sold real quick.
