What is happening in Assam (demography + politics) and what are we even doing about it?

From what I see and observe, the situation in Assam is becoming very serious, both demographically and politically.

Around 45% of Assam’s population is Muslim. Out of that, I believe maybe 55% to even 80% are illegal Bangladeshis. The remaining 54–55% includes Hindus and other communities. Hindus might be around 40–45%, and the rest are Christians and others.

Now even within that Hindu population, around 10–15% are Bengali and Bihari (Indian migrants). So if we actually calculate native Assamese people, it feels like we are only around 25%.

Total population of Assam is around 35 million, but honestly I am not even sure what the real number is anymore. Census is happening, but I don’t fully trust what will come out of it.

What I am seeing on ground:

I am from Lower Assam and I have seen things myself.

If you travel by bus from Guwahati to Goalpara, Dhubri, or Bongaigaon, you can clearly notice that around 80–90% passengers are Miya Muslims.

Also if you look at districts like Nagaon, Dhubri, Sonitpur, Cachar, Barpeta — these are among the most populated districts, and they are heavily dominated by Miya Muslims.

So this is not just numbers, this is visible ground reality.

Demography problem:

So what are we supposed to do about this?

How are we going to rebuild ourselves demographically?

Because what I am seeing is:
• Many Miya Muslim families having 5–6 children
• Our people not even reaching replacement level
• Many families having only 1 or 2 children

Even 2:2 replacement is not happening.

So obviously this is a serious demographic shift. I don’t know how we are going to fix this.

Identity problem:

Another major issue is we don’t even have a clear definition of who is “Assamese”. Because of this, we cannot unite properly. Indigenous people are divided.

If we don’t come under one umbrella, how are we going to survive demographically or politically?

Some people will disagree, that’s fine. But without unity, there is no strength.

Politics situation:

Now coming to politics.

Right now Assam politics is becoming Hindu vs Muslim. I don’t think this is the correct direction.

At the same time, BJP has been in power for almost 10 years. But what actual results are there?

They keep talking about illegal immigrants, but:
• Where is the strict action?
• Where is the visible result?

Also the Assam Accord — governments have been talking about implementing it for decades, maybe 30–40 years or more. But still nothing concrete has been done.

So what exactly is happening?

Gen Z responsibility:

This is coming from a Gen Z who is working hard and thinking about the future.

I feel like now it is time to actually do something. I don’t know exactly what, but something has to be done.

We need proper plan and action:
• Economically
• Culturally
• Demographically

Gen Z has to take responsibility and be more active, especially in politics.

What I see outside (tech experience):

I have worked outside Assam in tech, including big tech.

And from what I have seen, most people from Assam in these spaces are Bengalis. Maybe 80–90% from my experience.

I don’t see people from my own community much.

So where are our people?
Are we even entering these fields?
Are we even trying?

This honestly hurts.

Previous generation issue:

And about the previous generation, I don’t really understand what they were doing.

Many people didn’t focus on education. They are doing labour jobs, security jobs, and are okay with it.

Nothing wrong with honest work. But the question is:
Why not build something in our own place?

Same work they are doing outside, they can do here:
• Open shops
• Repair centers
• Small businesses

Instead, many go outside (especially South India), work there, and sometimes even face violence. We have seen incidents in Tamil Nadu.

So what is the long-term thinking?

Dirty politics:

Also recently I have seen attacks on Gen Z in politics.

Like that girl from Guwahati Central contesting elections — people are targeting her personally, saying things about her family and food habits.

This is just dirty politics.

People doing this should be in jail. Some of these politicians are extremely rich, but what have they actually done for people?

Rebel groups:

Also about rebel outfits — Assamese, Bodo, or any group.

What have they actually done?

Instead of helping people, they have harmed their own people. Killed more of their own than actually building anything.

Still people support them. I don’t understand why.

Migration and future concern:

Also it feels like more migration is happening from Bihar and Hindi-speaking regions.

People are coming, settling, buying land, building things.

In some cases, even tribal people are selling land for quick money.

And overall, it feels like instead of solving real issues, politics is being pushed into Hindu vs Muslim direction.

Final thought:

So overall I am just confused and frustrated.

Demography is changing.
No unity.
No strong political action.
Education problem.
Economic problem.

And I don’t see a clear solution right now.

But something has to be done.

TL;DR:

Assam is facing serious demographic and political changes. Native population feels like shrinking due to low birth rate and lack of unity, while others are growing faster. Governments have not taken strong action (even on Assam Accord), politics is becoming Hindu vs Muslim, and our people are lagging in education and jobs. Gen Z needs to step up, but no clear solution yet.
