I’m so frustrated

We’re spending thousands each year for updates that are beyond ridiculous.

The stair and railing tools are still useless, we can’t decide on which story we want to see a wall (only choices are home story only or all relevant stories (which will show the wall on ALL stories)) the roof tool still has no option to have a profiled rake edge, and the absolute disgrace are the car symbols from the late 1980s.

I could go on for an hour but I just wanted to vent.

Instead they’re making the use of libraries more complicated and adding half-assed AI tools that nobody needs.

A furious Archicad user of 34 years.

ArchiCAD News

When Graphisoft acquired Central Innovation, they absorbed all the cadimage tools (the best ones being windows/doors and wall/roof cladding - well because of this, they’ve decided to integrate Cadimage windows/doors and roof/wall coverings directly into their core software going live from ArchiCAD 30 🙌🎉

This is a massive win and shows there may be some positive upcoming changes happening inside the product dev team in ArchiCAD and Graphisoft as a whole.

FYI That’s why Cadimage Tools is now included in the ArchiCAD subscription now you don’t have to pay for the plugin.

Anyway thought I would just share.

Is anyone using National CAD Standard layers?

We are addressing our company templates, and there is division as to whether to use the National CAD Standard. It seems the division is mostly between young and old. The younger folks don’t think it’s as applicable with BIM technology, and the older folks think the standards reign supreme. What sayeth ye?

Has anyone built an MCP server for Archicad? (JSON Interface + Claude integration)

I'm exploring the idea of building an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server that connects Archicad's JSON Interface API with Claude AI for automated workflows.

Background:

  • Archicad has had a JSON-based HTTP API since version 25
  • MCP is Anthropic's protocol for connecting Claude to external tools/services
  • This would allow natural language commands like "export all wall schedules to Excel" or "check all windows for minimum dimensions" to execute directly in Archicad

My use cases:

  • Automated drawing checks (e.g., find all walls below code-required thickness)
  • Custom exports (schedules, element properties, specific filtered data)
  • Repetitive modeling tasks that follow patterns
  • Integration with project management workflows

Technical approach would be:

  • Local MCP server (Node.js/Python) running alongside Archicad
  • Communicates with Archicad via JSON Interface (localhost HTTP)
  • Claude Code uses the MCP server as a tool for queries/commands
  • Potentially wrap common tasks (element queries, property extraction, view exports)

Questions:

  1. Has anyone already built something like this? I don't want to reinvent the wheel
  2. Is there interest in this kind of integration in the Archicad community?
  3. What workflows would benefit most from AI-assisted automation in your practice?

I'm a practicing architect (mostly renovation/heritage work in Germany) and comfortable with scripting, but wanted to gauge interest before diving into development. Would appreciate any thoughts, existing solutions, or "here's why this won't work" reality checks.

How to Import 3d city models correctly?

Hey guys, so I tried basically everything while importing a 3d city model but no matter what file type I used (dxf, ifc, stl) The geometry is always weird and full of these smaller lines.
The only format that seems to work is .obj but when importing an obj, I cant delete any of the building and when I convert it to a Morph it ends up looking like this again.
Any help on this matter would be much apreciated.
Note: Site used for 3d model download: topo export

3D Model Viewer

Specializing in residential architecture design over 12 years and using ArchiCAD and Revit concurrently, I’ve used all the main 3D Model viewers to share with clients - e.g BimX, Modelo, Autodesk Viewer, Sketchup, Sketchfab etc.

You’ve probably experienced this - whenever you show a client the design within ArchiCAD, clients love it - but there are issues I’d like to fix with this….

I’m trying to have less physical meetings not more

Less zoom time also

I want to save more time (so I can design more)

I want each project to be more profitable (this means less time on meetings, zoom and more decisive clients- I would rather spend time nailing the design and design revisions than mundane in-between tasks.

When it comes to residential design (concept through to final concept design sign off) there’s a few things I want a 3D viewer to offer:

Zero software or app download needed (for client)

Simple - contains everything you need - nothing you don’t

Cost effective

Custom branding (so it’s all your brand)

Real day sun shading and skies

Real time x-sections

Saved views

Change object colors on the fly

See how the home looks at night (lights and all)

Set walkthroughs (showcasing best views incl. x-sections

Auto Rotate (builders like this for shows on screens)

Single link share

Fast loading

Real looking skies (plus simple white/ black options)

I got tired of all the current options not meeting expectations so I built one which does - Here:

Archiview.co

You can try for free

(if you have a business there’s a custom branded option)

Workflow I use from ArchiCAD:

From the 3D view -> export as FBX

Hopefully this helps anyone who has also been looking for a better 3D Model Viewer built for architecture that’s fast and intuitive without the bloat.

Personal ArchiCAD training?

I'm helping my partner to find training for ArchiCAD. She's proficient with Revit and Rhino but has never used ArchiCAD and just started a new job where it's all ArchiCAD. Looking for a personal or over zoom training does anyone know of this?

What’s everyone using to share your 3D Model with clients?

I’ve tried Archicad’s built in BIMX tool but find it clunky and clients find it hard to use - it needs to be simple.

I was a big fan and paying customer of 5 years of Modelo.io but they’ve dropped all support and everything is starting to break.

I’ve recently switched to Archiview.co - it’s like Modelo but much better in many ways.

Whenever I do house plans for a client or a builder who has a client, I’ve always found supplying an interactive 3D model (as a web link) speeds up client decisions and also uses less of my time personally.

What’s your favourite tool for sharing interactive 3D models with clients?

Advice Needed

Take a look at the only column I'm proyecting on the plans.

https://preview.redd.it/puk4mmmg1c0h1.jpg?width=1130&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=01eb5b1733bb6bece464b1917ffbdf302b0d8dad

I am remodeling my family house alongside my dad and before we propose anything to the engineers, we want to develop a couple of ideas. About what we would like to do. That column was hidden on a wall untill we discovered it yesterday. We already had the whole concept of the (semi) open kitchen settled but as you can see, now that's not entirely possible. We wanted some folding doors so that we would be able to "hide" the kitchen in case the maid was cooking and we had people over... but we also want the open kitchen concept in case friends come over to cook dinner or anything and make it look more spacious. Because the ceiling is double-height so... if we separate the spaces with entire walls it looks much narrower or tighter...

We had a bunch of different approaches but non feel right... like changing the structure completely, adding some support to the beam onto other columns, and then removing the column, we've obviously thought not doing an open concept but I personally hate that idea because of the height thing, we've thought about hiding the column by just adding some arches in between the 3 total columns....

RCPs and Lighting Symbols

I've created an RCP as a 3D document....but how do I get lighting to show up as symbols rather than 3D objects on my RCP for construction documents?  Is there a graphic override or something I can use?  Is it some sort of 2D/3D hybrid I need to create???

What workflow are you all using to create RCPs with lighting for CDs??

Lag in text boxes

Anyone have crazy lag typing in a text tool's box? Mine will be fine and the it's slow. Then goes normal. it happens on our other workstation too.

I thought it was our NAS doing a backup or something but it's not that.

Stair Tool fails to generate U-shaped winder stair with a narrow (10cm) inner gap (Archicad 29)

Hello everyone,

As an extra note, I am a beginner still trying to learn Archicad. I am transitioning from AutoCAD and currently using Archicad 29.

I am trying to model a specific U-shaped stair with winders based on an existing 2D AutoCAD drawing, but the Stair Tool keeps failing. When I try to draw it, the stair either completely disappears (aborts generation) or creates a severely distorted geometry.

Here are my exact stair parameters:

  • Total height: 288 cm
  • Risers: 18 (16 cm height)
  • Going: 27 cm
  • Flight width: 100 cm
  • The critical detail: The central gap (stairwell) is only 10 cm wide. This means the inner radius for the U-turn is just 5 cm.

What I have tried so far (and failed):

I disabled ALL the restrictions in the "Rules & Standards" tab (Min/Max Riser, Going, 2R+G, Minimum Winder Tread Width, etc.).

I tried using the Magic Wand (Spacebar) on a pre-drawn 2D outer boundary, and also tried it on a center baseline.

I experimented with turning types, especially switching to "Winder with Equal Angles"

Has anyone encountered this specific limitation? Is there a hidden setting to force the Stair Tool to accept this tight geometry, or is modeling the winder portion manually with the Slab Tool my only workaround here? Since I am still learning, any step-by-step guidance would be fantastic.

I have attached my AutoCAD 2D reference for clarity. Any help or workflow tips would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

Archicad lags when I have two or more instances open along with Chrome.

First, I'd like to apologize if this is not the right place to look for a solution to my problem — I'm new here.

The issue I'm having is the following: when I have two or more instances of Archicad open along with any web browser, the Archicad interface lags — the toolbars and palettes flicker as seen in the video and it takes a long time to respond. This gets worse if I have projects open. Archicad responds normally if I close the web browser I'm using, but this is a problem when I'm in a meeting.

I have tried several browsers — Google Chrome, Edge, Mozilla, and Brave — and the issue persists. It also happens across multiple versions of Archicad: 26, 27, 28, and currently 29.

The PC I work on has the following specs: Windows 11 Pro Intel i7-10700K Nvidia RTX 3070 32 GB RAM 3600 MT/s

Archicad is installed on an NVMe SSD and I save my files on a separate SSD.

All drivers are up to date, as are the Archicad versions

How do I get material quantities?

Hi

Following question:

I have modelled a second floor wooden outside deck, or balcony, or terrace or whatever, using beams and pillars. They all have different lengths, dimensions heights, etc. Now I obviously need to know how much wood of what dimension I am going to need to build it. I am fairly certain Archicad can just tell me, but I don't know how / what tool I need.

I have used the program in my education for about 10 years now, but unfortunately the topic of getting material quantities of the model never came up.

I don't need full instructions, I am happy to google them myself, but up to now whatever I tried to google didn't come up very helpful.

Please point me in the right direction.

Thanks!
