Finances

My cost of attendance at American University is still about $5,000 after financial aid. Has anyone successfully appealed for more aid or found other ways to lower costs this late in the game? I need all the advice because currently i’m at a loss.
Edit: $5,000 per semester

Shopping list ideas?

Hi everyone,

I am a new student here at AU (Fall 2026) and was looking through the packing list. Are there any really good products anyone would reccomend I get? (EX: [Name of Company] for lamps, [Name of Company] for laptops, etc).

Best,

Akshay

Fridge and Microwave

Hi everyone! I am a freshman and I was recently gifted a mini fridge as a graduation gift from a family member and I was planning on using it in my dorm, but I saw online that for AU there is only a certain type of microwave that we can rent and that microwave is attached to a mini fridge already. Is there any way to rent just the microwave, or maybe buy one and sneak it into the dorm?? I would want to use the mini fridge I was gifted obviously, but don't want to risk having to sneak in a microwave either. Please let me know your thoughts!!!

Final highschool transcripts

I’m a freshman who will be attending the upcoming fall semester, and I am from a county who doesn’t start processing final transcripts till after AU’s deadline (June 30). I’ve already emailed the undergrad admissions office abt this (still waiting on a response). Is anyone else also going through this/has already been through this?

Jobs

Hi all I was hoping to make some extra money next semester on top of my off campus job and I know that AU jobs are very competitive. That being said i know a lot of people that babysit and do jobs similar to that and i was wondering if people had any suggestions on how to get into things like babysitting near campus since it’s so residential.

Econ Major courses

Incoming freshman at American University this fall (B.S. Economics) and looking for feedback on my first semester schedule.

A little background:
• I’m in the Lincoln Scholars program.
• My advisor recommended that first-semester students complete WRT-100, Encounter AU, a Complex Problems Seminar, a Habits of Mind course, and a Q1 (Quantitative Literacy) requirement.
• I took AP Macro, AP Micro, AP Statistics, and AP Calculus in high school, but AP scores haven’t been released yet, so I’m registering as if I don’t have the credit for now.
• If I get a 4 or 5 on AP Stats, I’m planning to use STAT-296 to satisfy the Q1 requirement.
• I’m interested in economics, public policy, politics, and eventually possibly adding a second major or minor related to public policy/government.

Current schedule:
WRT-100 (College Writing)
CORE-102/103 Encounter AU
CORE-106 The Examined Life (Lincoln Scholars section)
ECON-100 Principles of Macroeconomics
ECON-120 (Habits of Mind)
GOVT-110
STAT-296
Total: 18 credits

My main questions:
• Does this look like a solid first-semester schedule for a B.S. Economics student?
• If I get AP credit for Macro and/or Micro, should I replace ECON-100 with another course or move into intermediate economics right away?
•Is 18 credits a good workload for a first-semester Lincoln Scholar, or should I consider adding another class?

Any advice from current AU students, especially Econ majors or Lincoln Scholars, would be appreciated.

Eagle Access Course Materials Program for Law students

Hello!

I’m an incoming 1L at American University WCL (starting Fall 2026) and I was just checking all the required forms, and realized there’s this eagle access course program that allows for access to course materials at a reduced price. It’s not clear whether all classes will require printed books, and how much each will cost. I assume I’ll get that info in late july.

For other Law students: is this program worth it? It’s more than 1K per semester, so it seems a bit expensive.

Thank you for your assistance!

incoming freshman

is it suitable for a freshman to take a 300s course if it’s available? i really want to take MGMT-300 but my counselor said he doesn’t recommend those for freshman, but i wanted to get a students perspective. i’m a hard worker and when im actually interested in the topic im learning about, such as this, I do really well. (for reference i took 9 aps and have done a music business internship already.) i don’t want to overwhelm myself though. lmk and thanks!

waitlist

How likely it is to get off the waitlist for Kogod classes? I’m a freshman who did RD and I get the last last slot to choose my courses, so most of my courses have waitlist already :(

registering

a lot of the classes i want to sign up for have waitlists all day except for pm slots, but i am definitely not a pm school kind of girl. should i just register for them anyways to be guaranteed my spot or take the gamble with a waitlisted class that’s in the morning? kinda stressing about this, any advice (for this post or registering in general) would be greatly appreciated!
