My son suffers from Allergies

Hello all

My 11yr old son struggles with allergies CONSTANTLY. We live in Houston Texas where pollen is always high. I've never owned an Air purifier (sad to say considering our situation) and I'm currently to find a good one. Each time I think I've found the perfect Air purifier I find out later that it has horrible reviews. I just need one for his bedroom that filters for pollen, dust, mold with a budget of $150. I don't know the square feet of his room. It's just medium sized. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all.

Is it concerning that the Alen Air Breathesmart purifiers have no particulate filter downstream of the pelleted carbon?

Many air purifiers incorporate pelleted carbon granules.

Any carbon dust that may be created from the granules (which might happen if they are, say, jostled together during transport) is a health hazard if inhaled.

Thus it makes sense that most of the purifiers that incorporate carbon pellets put the carbon upstream of a HEPA or other particulate filter, which can then capture such dust. These include the Winix 5510, Coway Airmega ProX, IQ Air Health Pro Plus XE, AirPura (various models) and Austin Air Healthmate.

A notable exception, however, is the Alen Air Breathesmart series, which have no particulate filter downstream of the carbon. I.e., instead of prefilter/carbon/HEPA, they're prefilter/HEPA/carbon.

Presumably Alen Air knows what it's doing. But then again, so should Winix, Coway, IQ Air, AirPura, and Austin Air, all of which take the opposite approach, seemingly for good reason.

Thus is there any reason to be concerned about Alen Air's design? Any idea why they did it this way?

Note1: I'm referring specifically to pelleted carbon. I don't expect this would be a concern with bonded carbon filters.

Note2: I bellive the Oransi AirMend also doesn't have a particulate filter downstream of its carbon filter, since it's my understanding you can choose either their HEPA or their carbon filter, but not both. I'm not sure about the AllerAir models, or the BlueAir Signature.

Help me choose: Coway Mighty (€140) vs Xiaomi 4 Lite (€150) for a bedroom?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for a new air purifier and I'm stuck between two options. Because of a sale and some vouchers, they are currently priced almost the same for me:

• Coway AP-1512HH (Mighty): €140 (Sale + €60 voucher).

• Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 Lite: €150.

My main concerns:

  1. Noise levels for sleeping: I plan to use this in a bedroom (approx. 4.5m x 2.5m). Which one is quieter on its lowest setting? I need it to be whisper-quiet while I sleep.

  2. Performance vs. Convenience: The Coway is well-known for its high CADR (421 m3/h) and solid reputation, but it has no smart features. I use Homebridge, so with the Coway, I’d be limited to a smart plug (On/Off only).

  3. Smart Integration: The Xiaomi 4 Lite has a slightly lower CADR (360 m3/h) but integrates fully with HomeKit via Homebridge. This allows me to see PM2.5 levels and adjust fan speeds or set automations (like "Night Mode") directly from my phone.

The Coway seems like the "stronger" machine on paper and is a very established model, but the Xiaomi offers way more control.

For those who have experience with either: how is the sleep mode/lowest fan speed? Does the Coway's extra power outweigh the lack of smart controls at this price point for a room this size?

Thanks for the help!

Low-noise purifier (<30 dB) for 1680 ft^3 bedroom

My bedroom is 1680 ft^3, and thus needs a purifier with 1680/12 =140 CADR to give 5 ACH.

The problem is my bedroom is very quiet (it's below the 30 dB floor of my sound meter), and I'm a light sleeper, so I'd like a HEPA13 purifier (or combination of purifiers) that would come close to that CADR without raising the noise floor. And I'd like it to have some pelleted carbon filtration.

Thus far I've tried the Coway Airmega ProX (170 CFM on silent mode), BlueAir Signature (125 CFM on sleep mode) and Winix 5510 (55 CFM on sleep mode). Of these, only the Coway provides sufficient CADR, but only the Winix is sufficiently quiet. [Though it just developed a clicking sound on sleep mode, so I'll need to exchange it for a new unit.]

At this point, it seems my best bet is to use two Winix 5510's, which would give me 110 CFM. Since less dust is generated when you're sleeping (right?), I'm guessing that should be enough.

But I'm open to alternative suggestions.

Sweet burning smell from new Coway Airmega

It seems like this is a known issue, but I can’t find anywhere that confirms what it actually is. I’ve seen it stated that the smell could be some sort of volatile organic compound left over from the purified air, I’ve seen others state that it is something to do with the materials used to make the filter, or that it is the filter itself. Is anyone aware of any consensus on this? Is it dangerous? It is a strong smell. Will it go away? Should I exchange/return the unit?

NYC, 10x10 room, looking to filter for allergens. Purchased from Amazon. Coway airmega 100.

No talk about the Coway Airmega Mighty2?

Why do I not see anyone talking about this model? There's no videos about it or anything. I get that it came out pretty recently but no first impressions? it looks like a more modern version of the 1512hh. Also what are the chances it goes on sale as the low as 1512hh?

Found an Airmega ProX for 50% off

$550CAD for an Amazon Warehouse deal. Someone had punched in both fan grills and the fan was hitting them. Far more than "cosmetic" but I was able to fix it.

I'm running it outside for for a couple days because the filter smell is making me nauseous... so hopefully that goes away.

It was between this and Levoit 600s for our 550sqft living room/kitchen/hallway (I have 200s in both bedrooms).

Wildfire smoke was terrible last year, AQI was over 400 (591 at one point). If that happens again I might still need some CR boxes but hoping this will mostly do the job so it can be a bit quieter.

SOMEONE HELP ME, IM TOTALLY LOST!

TL;DR - Which air purifier do I want? (I imagine u get thos one a lot)

Im in the uk.

Rooms that need purifying are no bigger than 20m/2 (50m/3) although I am now considering getting one for the downstairs hallway+landing as well

Im initially looking to filter particulates at the moment but i will also be wanting voc in the future.

The smallest bedroom needs a dehumidifer as well (8m/2)

*NOISE IS NOT AN ISSUE FOR MASTER BEDROOM,*

Budget is £350 for 3 rooms

Question 1: Is the "airmega mighty " https://coway.co.uk/products/airmega-mighty-1?variant=40579261202525&source=aw&sv1=affiliate&sv_campaign_id=531573&awc=79336_1776606013_465de1b16fb1fbf2635c8e117b9caf60

the same as the as the 1512hh ive seen referenced elsewhere online?

Question 2: I know each room has to have a purifier but could I, say, rotate a single unit between two rooms and still have a good effect on air quality? Eg. Have bedroom 2 and 3 share a unit by moving it every day?

-----

Okay, so after probably a year of thinking, im finally going to bite the bullet and get some air purifiers (and some dehumidifiers). Whenever I come home from work, I cant breath, my son constantly has breathing issues when he in the house and its fucking dusty.

All year, ive been telling myself "yeah, I'll just go out and buy an air purifier, it just filters air, nothing to it (i even had a fever dream where I just whipped the cabin filter out of my car and hooked up a vacuum to it)

Well...fuck me, I was wrong. Air purifying looks like it could be a full on hobby. Im amazed there isnt some kind of competetive air purifying scene.

Initially went to curry's (uk equivalent of a best buy/big box for consumer electronics) to have a look at what's around. My Partner likes the dysons and is happy to pay out £350 for the hushjet(not gonna lie, they certainly look the part) So £350 is the budget. Ive done a little bit of first page google and now im fucking lost.

Im looking at coways at the moment. Initially i was considering the airmega mighty (is this the same as the 1512hh ive seen referenced?) But this might be a tad overkill for the one room.

The rooms that I want a purifyer in are no bigger than 20m/2 (50m/3) with the smallest room being a meager 10m/2 (this one also needs a dehimidifier)

Can I really just use a bunch of coway airmega 50's for all the rooms? And maybe use an airmega mighty for the hallway+landing?

At the moment im only looking at removing particulates and pollen but im thinking about voc's going forward (i live next to a port)

Is there anything else that may offer better value? Or do more? Consumables must be easily available

As a side note, I have to sleep with noise. I currently sleep with an ac unit set to fan only so, if there's a good unit with its main downside being noise, show me.

If you made it this far. I really appreciate you reading my sleep deprived, insomnia ranting. X

P.s...is there a competetive air purifying circuit?

Recommendation for Air Purifier for small apartment.

I'm looking to purchase an air purifier for my small apartment, specifically to help with dust / smoke for my asthma and allergies.

Country: Australia

Room volume: Lounge / Kitchen = 3.45m x 7.1m, hallway 1.10m x 1.65m, bedroom 3.33m x 3.63m with 2.7 m ceilings. Total = 104 m³ roughly. (Bathroom / Laundry doors remain closed except when airing out the apartment, so I haven't included them.)

Filtration needs: Dust, smoke, odours, occasional VOCs, some allergies.

Budget: I would like to aim for around $500 but can go higher if needed.

Not sure about yearly cost $1-200 I guess. If non-crappy filters were available somewhere like taobao / aliexpress I'd be happy to purchase them from there. (this doesn't include the electricity costs, cheaper would be nice, but I'll just pay whatever fixes my issues really.)

Some of the Air Purifiers I've been looking at are below, but I would like recommendations from more experienced people.

ZERO+ PRO 5-stage Air Purifier - 470m³ per hour.

Blueair Pure Max 3650I Air Purifier - 697m³ per hour.

Samsung AX5500 Air Purifier - 467 m³ per hour.

Thanks in advance.

Two air purifiers already do I get another?

I have a blueair 311+max plus a dyson air purifier running and I can't get rid of these smells that the builder says is "non toxic!" Help! I just ordered another shark. I open the door periodically but it's south Florida so I'm blowing hot humid air in. (800 sq ft)

Air Purifiers recommendation

Hello, I want to buy an air purifier and I need a recommendation.

I want to keep it in the bedroom, where I also have my desk, where I sometimes read or work on the computer. I also have clothes there, and a clothing rack with clothes on it.

The idea is that I have quite a lot of dust in the room, even though I don’t air it out very often. I would also like it to have a carbon filter, to remove odors, perfume, deodorant, popcorn, etc.

The room is around 25–30 m². I have 2 cats, and sometimes you can notice that they leave a bit of hair around the room.

The models I’m considering are:

Philips 1000i - CADR 300 m³/h

- Pros: It is the most powerful and fastest, and it could run on a lower setting. It has a carbon filter. Maybe best choice!

Cons: The filters are more expensive, but it’s not a problem to change one every 10–12 months at most.

Philips 600i - CADR 170 m³/h

Pros: It is small, doesn’t take up much space.

Cons: It does not have a carbon filter, it will probably need to run at the highest speed, and it likely won’t handle cat hair and dust as well as the others.

Philips 800i - CADR 190 m³/h
Pros: It is small, doesn’t take up much space, and it has a carbon filter.
Cons: It will probably need to run at a higher speed, medium or high (but not disturbing).

Levoit Core 300S - CADR 240 m³/h

Pros: It is small, elegant, and has cheaper filters than Philips.

Cons: It will probably need to run on a higher setting (which is fine since I’m not home during the day). From what I’ve heard, it won’t capture dust very well (which is what I mainly care about), and it will take longer to clean the air compared to the 1000i.

What do you think, what would you recommend for everything mentioned above?

Air Purifier Placement/Recommendations

Hello guys I am from germany, this is my flat which has the following rooms. I mostly work from home in my bedroom and on the evenings I am mostly in my livingroom. I am allergic to pollen. At first I was looking for only on air purifier because I leave my doors open all the time. Would that work or would you recommend 2 units? One in the bedroom and one in the living room. I thought about buying one and placing it between the bedroom an livingroom because my doors are always open. My budget is not that limited and I already did some research. I was looking into the Levoit Vital 200S, Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 Pro, WINIX 5500-2. All of these units are around 190-210€ currently. Which units would you recommend, how many and what placement? Thank you guys
Rooms:
Bedroom/Zimmer: 12 m²/129 sqft
Livingroom/WohnenEssen: 27 m²/290 sqft
Entrance/Gard: 8 m²/ 86.111 sqft
Bathroom/BadWC: 5m²/ 53sqft

Recommendations for a ~2,600 square feet house with this layout?

I live in Northeast Florida.

So, the line breaks are areas where there’s no door- it’s open. So, while it’s not quite an open floor plan, there also aren’t doors in the “main area” for the most part.

I’ve tried to learn about air purifiers but it’s a bit confusing and overwhelming.

My cat was just diagnosed with asthma, which is why I want to invest in air purifiers, but I want to make sure I’m doing this as efficiently as possible. I don’t want to buy air purifiers for cheap that don’t really do anything, but I also don’t want to do this inefficiently and spend way more than I should. (I know the house is big, but don’t get it twisted, I live with my parents, I’m not rich lol)

It’s important that it captures particles that could irritate my cat (especially dust- our house is quite dusty) but I saw something about some of the purifiers emitting ozone? Which sounds like something I should avoid.

I’m not concerned about the looks or size of it at all. I would like it if it wasn’t super noisy; I’m seeing stuff about filters you can get that “aren’t noisy on the lower level”, but what exactly is the point of getting an air purifier that you have to run on the lower levels? I want to make sure it’s really purifying the air and I’m getting my money’s worth.

Also, I am not at all handy, so not really looking for something complex I need to build on my own.

So far, I’ve looked into the Air Fanta, and the Levoit 200S-P. From my research, these seem like solid purifiers. The Air Fanta almost seems too good to be true- how is it under $200 for something that seemingly performs well and covers >500 square feet? Is it just cuz it’s kind of ugly? Or is it super noisy?

Also, our ceilings are pretty tall. Maybe like 10 feet, give or take? Some rooms less and some more.

Austin Immunity, Bedroom or Healthmate Plus? For VOCs, car exhaust/pollution.

I'm debating between the Austin Air Immunity, Bedroom or Healthmate Plus. Can someone with any of them help me decide? Is it worth it to go with the Immunity or will I be fine with the Healthmate Plus? I realize this is subjective but would love to hear your own personal experiences.

Room is about 700 sq ft. Need to filter VOCs, car exhuast/pollution. I already have an IQAir Healthpro Plus but it doesn't seem to deal with VOCs/car exhaust as well. Also, it sucks air from the bottom and the Austin one sucks air from 360 degrees so I'm curious if that will work better for me. Open to your thoughts. THanks!

How come no one talks about The Defender Filterqueen air purifier anymore?

I just started experiencing lots of coughing, watery eyes, trouble breathing and I think it’s because my dog and I share my bed. (He is a 17 lb Pomeranian, 3 year old) This is my first experience owing a dog and I’ve heard an overwhelming amount of air purifier options. I’m a sucker for old school American made products that last a life time… I’m wondering why it’s rare I see anything about Filterqueen, is it cause this product is so good that there’s no need to talk about it? Or cause it’s an older brand and not a lot of people my age (33) even know about it? Advice will be greatly appreciated.

Does Coway not make replacement filters for Airmega 50?

Their website has had the replacement listed as out of stock for a few months now. If they don't make them anymore, should I just buy a knockoff on amazon?

Need advice buying top tier air purifier to get rid of hookah smoke and odors

  • Your country of residence: Europe.
  • Each room or area's volume, in cubic feet or cubic meters. (You need at least one purifier per room or area.): 30 m² (323 ft²).
  • Your filtration needs: e.g., pollen, dust, cigarette smoke, VOCs, cooking odors.: The main goal is to get rid of hookah smoke and odors.
  • Startup budget.: $1-1.5k.
  • Yearly budget (electricity + filters).: $300 I guess.

My main goal is to remove hookah smoke and odors from my apartment - 30 m² (323 ft²). as quickly and effectively as possible, prevent the smell from spreading to other rooms, and, of course, just clean the air of dust and other pollutants. As I understood that the main factors for this are a high CADR and a good carbon filter? I’ve spent a lot of time researching different models and have narrowed it down to Daikin and Sharp, specifically these models:

  • Daikin MC80Z - around $900
  • SHARP KI-TX100EU-W - around $1500

I’m not sure if I should pay extra for Sharp or stick with Daikin. Maybe you could suggest some other interesting models? AlsoI like the ionization feature in an air purifier because it makes the air feel fresher and gives it a pleasant smell.

Humidification isn't a necessary factor, because I plan to buy a humidifier separately
