Afrobeats vs Amapiano vs Gengetone — which genre is genuinely winning globally right now?
African music is having its biggest global moment ever — but not all genres are getting equal shine.
Afrobeats has been on a historic run with artists crossing into mainstream everywhere. Amapiano exploded out of South Africa and hasn't stopped. Gengetone holds it down strong regionally but hasn't quite broken out the same way yet.
Curious where this community stands. No wrong answers — but explain your pick in the comments below.
Looking for lyrics for Sona Jobarteh - Gambia [The Gambia]
Hello, I really like this song and wanted to add its lyrics to Musixmatch (a lyrics website), but I don't know if these are correct (or even make sense). So it would be great if someone could check. (It's in Mandinka afaik)
La magie de LERIE SANKOFA en 2 min. Enjoy 😄
Elle s'appelle Lerie Sankofa.
Is Amapiano taking over from Afrobeats globally?
Afrobeats has been dominating global playlists for years, but Amapiano is everywhere right now and it doesn't seem to be slowing down. Gengetone from Kenya is still holding it down regionally.
I put up a quick poll to see what people actually think — curious what this sub says.
Vote and see how the results are tracking here. Drop your thoughts below too. Is it purely about streaming numbers, or does cultural impact count?

Hi all! I’m conducting research for my dissertation on Afrobeats’ globalisation post-2000s and its influence on other African genres/subcultures. I am looking for participants that are willing to take part in a short interview for it.
If you, or anyone you know, might be up for it, please reach out and I'll send the full info. Happy to answer anything before you commit. Thank you 🙏
