PSA - SR5 Owners, Your Speedometer Is Most Likely Way Off(But Within Tolerance)
First of all, picture for some eye candy while you read the rest of the post(and also to show exactly what model I have).
As for the PSA, I just figured I would post here to let all 6thGen 4Runner owners know, especially SR5 owners, that it is VERY likely that your speedometer is 3-5mph off! When it says you are going 65mph, you will actually be going between 60-62mph. Now, this is within some sort of world wide regulations and tolerances, but it is actually extremely dangerous in the world we live in today.
I was pulled over for speeding(10-15 over on the highway) multiple times in my driving history, when I was much younger. It brought me to the point now in my life where I never speed and I consistently use cruise control at the speed limit once I reach that limit. Turns out I was going 4mph under the speed limit in my brand new car. Why is this dangerous? People now more than ever have shorter fuses and are way quicker to do some dumb stuff, so I was consistently having people blow past me in double yellow lines in 35mph speed limit zones, or coming fly up behind me and riding my rear bumper at maybe 1 car length. This is causing a road hazard(going so far under the speed limit), and putting my family and other drivers in danger. I know it is up to the other drivers to not drive like that, but you can only control what you do...
The issue seems to be caused by the smaller socks/shoes they put on the SR5 models*(insert HILARIOUS mini-van tire joke here).* Apparently since every other trim gets bigger tires and rims, they are all(including the SR5), calibrated to use those bigger tires and rims. Again, this does fall within some 6.25mph over spec requirement for speedometers, but good lord was it causing an issue for my family in our normal daily driving. Just in the last day since we noticed this, we corrected this by going 4mph over on our speedometer, and magically, we have not been passed once in the last few hours of us driving... Just watch out guys, and maybe check your speed with a GPS or something to confirm if you have this issue or not.
To wrap this all up, I did contact my dealership, to see if there is anything they are willing to do(maybe new socks and shoes?????), and I will keep this post updated on that. I am not saying I am expecting anything, since this is within a worldwide tolerance, but it is kind of scary realizing I was driving THAT slow. I mean, I like going the speed limit, maybe 1 over, but I hate going under the limit. My 2015 Chevy Cruze with 150K miles on it tracks my speed perfectly on point, this vehicle should as well.
Edit to clarify generation, even though we are on a 6th gen sub xD(just in case)
EDIT - UPDATE FROM DEALER - This is something they can fix by re-calibrating the speedometer, but it would be a $189 diagnostic fee to do that. I said "No thank you, I will live with it until I get new tires that make my speedometer correct, thank you!" and got off the phone. I got to say, I was not expecting to have to pay to fix that specific issue, but good lord what a twist xD
