Looking for a drum machine/sequencer for Ableton live jamming setup

Hey everyone,

I’ve been getting really into live jamming and recording sessions lately. My current setup is:

APC40 MKII (main Ableton control surface)

KeyLab Essential (keyboard/controller)

Korg Minilogue (hardware synth for sequencing and sound design)

I’m really enjoying playing the Minilogue’s internal sequencer and building live takes around it, but I feel like I’m missing something for drums. I’d like to add a drum machine or sequencer to handle beats during live recording and jams.

My main goal is something hands-on, immediate, and performance-friendly, and also studio programming.

I’ve been looking at a few options:

  • Arturia BeatStep Pro
  • KeyStep Pro
  • Arturia DrumBrute (or DrumBrute Impact)
  • Behringer RD-8 MKII
  • Novation Circuit Tracks
  • Model:Samples

But I’m not sure which direction makes the most sense for a live Ableton + hardware hybrid setup.

Push 3 is unfortunately out of my budget for now.

So I’m wondering:

Are BeatStep Pro / KeyStep Pro still solid choices in 2026 for this kind of setup?

Or would something like DrumBrute / RD-8 be better for live groove and performance?

Or is there another option I should really consider that fits better with Ableton + external synth jamming?

Would love to hear how people are building live jam setups around Ableton these days.

I am also open to options like standalone groove boxes if it is possible to sync it with Ableton and export MIDI and audio to extend the idea and finalize it.
