  • (1) Budget, country, and currency: Around €1,000 - €1,200 (selling my current gear to fund the new one), Italy, EUR.
  • (2) What equipment, if any, you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs? Sony a6700 + Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8. It is too bulky and heavy for Everyday Carry (EDC). It stays at home unless I'm on vacation.
  • (3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot? Street photography, travel, and daily life
  • (4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both? Primarily photography (shooting in RAW for editing).

Full Post:

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some external perspective. I recently bought a Sony a6700 with the Tamron 17-70mm as my first "serious" camera. I used it for 3 weeks on vacation and the performance is incredible—AF speed and image quality are top-notch.

However, I have a major issue: outside of vacations, I never use it. It’s simply too big and heavy to carry around every day. Also, since I’m just a casual hobbyist who likes to shoot RAW and edit for fun, I feel like the a6700 is "too much" camera for me. The professional size is killing the fun of having it with me at all times.

I’m considering selling the kit and getting a Sony RX100 VII (or the VA). I want something pocketable that I’ll actually use.

Do you think this is a reasonable move for an amateur, or am I going to regret the drop from an APS-C sensor to a 1-inch sensor? Has anyone here downgraded for the sake of portability and been happy with it?

Thanks in advance!

TL;DR

I find the a6700 + Tamron 17-70 too bulky for daily use. As an amateur who just wants to shoot RAW and edit, I’m thinking of switching to a pocketable RX100 VII/VA. Is the trade-off in quality worth the portability?

Hi everyone, I need a external opionion.

I currently own a Sony a6700 with the Tamron 17-70mm. It’s my first serious camera, and after using it for 3 weeks on vacation, I fell in love with the AF speed and image quality. However, I’m struggling with two things:

  1. Outside of trips, it stays home. It’s just too bulky and heavy for my everyday life.
  2. I’m strictly a hobbyist. I shoot in RAW because I enjoy the editing process, but honestly, I feel like the a6700 is "too much" camera for my needs. The gap between my skills and the gear's potential is huge, and the weight makes it less fun to carry.

I’m considering selling it all for a Sony RX100 VII or VA. I want something I can actually keep in my pocket and use without feeling like I’m carrying a professional rig.

Is this a sensible downgrade for a casual user, or will I regret losing the APS-C sensor power?
