Air tag detected, now its not

Im hoping someone can help me with some information as I dont have an iPhone and dont use trackers.
My husband stopped at a gas station near us this morning before heading to work. He got to work around 7:35ish, parked, and was ready to go in. He goes about his day until lunch. At lunch, he sees an
AIRTAG DETECTED notification on his phone. It says it was first detected today at 7:40 am. He has to go back to work but wants to look for it on his last break. Last break comes, and he's trying to play the sound, but it will not play.
It also says it can not be detected. It won't play the sound, nothing. I doubt someone came and took it off because its a small company so someone would have questioned a random car coming into their parking lot.
Could the airtag still be there and just be dead? It seems unlikely it would be any of his new coworkers. We have a toddler, so I'm just a little extra freaked out and paranoid.
