Hey everyone! I got my surgery done last month at Eight Plastic Surgery in Gangnam and want to share my brutally honest review. I found Eight PS through reddit and people's reviews seemed really good so they were one of the clinics that I contacted through WhatsApp and ended up choosing them. I inquired about doing double eyelid surgery and rhinoplasty.
Initial communication over WhatsApp: I had no issues with the communication over WhatsApp. They took about 24 hours to respond which to me is totally fine. They answered my questions and concerns and gave me quotes for the procedures. I was able to book a consultation the day after I landed in Seoul.
The consultation: My first impression when I walked into the clinic was that it's very clean! All the receptionists are so pretty and friendly! Everyone looked well put together. There were 2 other people waiting so I was glad to see that it wasn't giving off "factory clinic". I had Yunni as my communicator and she spoke perfect English! I first did a ct scan and then she brought me to one of the consulting rooms and asked me some questions and told me I would be meeting with Dr. Choi. She said the wait shouldn't be too long and left me in the room. I waited and she came back and said "sorry, there are 3 people waiting ahead of you for consults, it will probably be another 20 minutes". I knew he wouldn't be here in 20 minutes! that's less than 10 minutes each for those 3 people! I ended up waiting 2 hours. 2 HOURS! I even left the room to grab myself water at the reception area.
Finally Dr. Choi came and he also spoke perfect English which I was relieved! I was able to ask questions and talk about my worries and concerns. Like another redditor said, the doctor touched my face and used metal sticks and swabs to show me what the results would look like. He recommended non-incisional eyelid surgery and showed me where he would be making incisions on my nose. Overall, I really like Dr. Choi. He is soft spoken (like me), he is very knowledgeable and told me what to expect after the procedure. My healing process (now at 3 weeks) is very much in line with what he said. Despite the long wait during the consult, I decided to go ahead with the surgery, paid my deposit, and booked my surgery. I felt very self-conscious about my appearance but everyone at the clinic was so kind and friendly (the receptionists, Yunni, and Dr. Choi) so I felt like I was making the right choice by choosing Eight PS.
Surgery day: I was feeling really nervous ahead of the surgery and started to have doubts. I am usually okay with needles (blood sample needles) but I started to get in my head about everything else. I was to fast 6 hours before the surgery (no food or water). They had asked me to come in 30 mins early before my surgery time. When I got to the clinic, I was met by Yunni who brought me down to get my photos taken. I was then brought into the consult room again to do a final consult with Dr. Choi before the procedure. Yunni left the room and came back saying "sorry, Dr. Choi is just finishing another surgery right now but he should be done in about 20 minutes". Of course I took that 20 minutes as a grain of salt. I don't know how long I waited because I just knew it wouldn't be 20 minutes. When Dr. Choi finally came in we went over what I wanted. He drew on my face and we were ready to go. Dr Choi left and Yunni came back with another employee. I was confused. Yunni asked for my credit card so that she could pick up my medicine (this is actually nice of them to do that!). But nobody explained who this person was but I was to follow her. I quickly realized she was going to be my translator.
The surgery: At this point Yunni wasn't with me anymore and I was feeling REALLY nervous and uneasy. I went through the air shower which took less than a second and the door opened to the other side and this is where things started to feel a little factory-like. There were 2 nurses who rushed me to the table bed. They were working so fast that the translator wasn't translating fast enough so communication was so off. For example, the nurses would ask me to go higher on the bed but they would just start pulling me up before the translator could tell me in English. One nurse was putting the IV in which hurt really bad. She couldn't get a vein so she had to do it a second time in a different spot which also hurt really bad! Another nurse started cleaning/disinfecting my face and oh my gosh when they disinfected my nostrils, that was the worst pain ever! They stuffed like a wet cloth in my nose and pushed it so deep it felt like it hit the back of my throat. I tried to put my hand up to stop them but realized they strapped my arms and legs down to the bed. This is where I start panicking. With already feeling nervous about the procedure, I started thinking about telling them to stop and cancelling the whole surgery. The nurses say something and the translator says "just close your eyes". Sure, cause closing my eyes will help with how rough they are being. Dr. Choi finally walks in and I feel better seeing a familiar face. Thankfully Dr. Choi is gentle he had me sit up to re-draw the lines on my face. I looked at the time and it was 2 hours past my scheduled surgery time! When I was laying down again I kept saying "im scared. im scared." but nobody heard me (lmao :(! ). The sedation went in and I was out! I was woken up by the nurses and translator. The surgery took about 2.5-3 hours! Dr. Choi was nowhere to be seen. Being highly sedated still, I was annoyed that they made me get off the table and walk myself to one of the recovery rooms. The two nurses had to hold me up because I couldn't stand up straight. I was left in the room for an hour by myself as I was coming back to full consciousness. When I felt ready to go I kept hitting the call button but nobody was coming. It was dead quiet! Finally Yunni came and gave me my meds and instructions. We were the only ones left in the clinic as everyone had already gone home for the day. I thanked her for staying. She scheduled me to come back the next day for cleaning and post laser treatments
Post care: I went to a different area of the clinic to get my post recovery treatment. The lady I met with seemed a bit cold but I wasn't sure if it was because of a language barrier. She took the gauzes out and showed me how and where to apply ointment. After that I went and did the laser treatment which lasted for 10 minutes. The device stopped on it's own so I was confused. Nobody was coming so I just got up and left the room. I found the lady sitting at the front chatting with another coworker. I found that pretty unprofessional. They scheduled me to come back again the next day for laser treatment. Laser #2, the same lady brought me to the same room and set up the device for me. She left and then came back, shut off the device, and said "okay all done". In my head I was thinking that was so quick and wasn't 10 minutes! At the same time, they brought in another patient who looked like she did a lot more procedures than I did. I was msging my friend right before laser #2 started so I was able to approximate that they only gave me 5 minutes of laser treatment. Sure, I didn't do as much procedures as the girl they brought in but to be pushed aside like that for someone else felt very off putting.
Laser #3, 4, and 5 went fine and lasted for 10 minutes. A week after the surgery, it was finally time to take the stitches out, I thought Dr. Choi would be doing that but it was one of the tech ladies that does the laser treatments. Surprisingly I didn't have to wait long for Dr. Choi. He came in right after and observed my healing. He said everything looked good and that the swelling was normal. Again he told me what to expect in terms of healing time and when the bruising should subside. The whole interaction took less than 10 minutes. There was a nurse standing at the door ushering him to the next patient.
Overall: I am okay with my experience with Eight Plastic Surgery. Mainly because of Dr. Choi. He has a calming presence which really helped me plus when he speaks you can tell he is really knowledgeable! Some cons I would say is I would have wished I saw Dr. Choi at least once during post care. I also wished the final consult with Dr. Choi after the stitches were removed wasn't so rushed!
The only con I can think of about Yunni and the receptionists is how long they made me wait during consultation and on the surgery day. Other than that I thought they were great! I feel like this is what they want you to see when you first walk in. I did not like my experience with the nurses and post care techs. Unfortunately they made me feel like I was just another number to them. I found there was a huge contrast in professionalism/hospitality between Yunni/receptionists and the nurses/post care workers. You don't see the nurses or the techs before your surgery. You only see them at or after the surgery when it's too late to back out (lol). The reviews I read on reddit about Eight Plastic Surgery were really good so I don't know why my experience was so off? After my first consult, I was really happy and felt great about my decision I recommended the clinic to my friend. But after all is said and done, I'm not sure if I would recommend the clinic anymore?
In terms of my face, I am healing well and I am happy with my appearance so far! My eyes and nose are still swollen but so far people say the change is subtle which is exactly what I asked for. I would highly recommend Dr. Choi. I think he is a great doctor and you would be in great hands under his care!
