I test side hustles, like actually do them, and share what's real vs. what's social media bait.
I've stacked over $10k doing this since the Covid period.
Here's what I've learned.
Quick note before we dive in: Side hustles are side income, not a career replacement. If you don't have a main job, go focus on that first.
Side hustles are for beer money, bridging gaps, and building a stash while you improve your main situation.
Online surveys: You can make $100-200/month if you're lucky. Not worth your time unless you're truly at $0. Search here for opportunities.
Dumpster diving for metal: More viable than it sounds. Construction site dumpsters that aren't fenced are fair game in most states. Average haul nets about $30.
Focus groups: Most underrated one on this list. I've made $100+/hr consistently since 2023. Sign up on User Interviews, fill out your profile with your hobbies and career skills, and you'll get matched with relevant studies. Also try Prolific. ~$3k total over 3 years.
Get-paid-to sites: Scrambly, Swagbucks, MistPlay, etc. Games are slow but downloading finance/banking apps often pays $100+ for a few hours of work.
Broker sign-up bonuses: Webull gives you $60 in shares for a $0.01 deposit. Schwab Starter Kit: $50 in, $101 out. Easy $150 right there, and probably $500+ realistically if you shop around.
Bank churning: Banks pay you to direct deposit with them. PNC recently paid $400 for $5k deposited over 90 days. Use Doctor of Credit to find new promos constantly.
Credit card churning: Same idea. "Spend $5k, get $500 back" type promos are common.
Selling plasma: About $60–80 per donation now (used to be $20–30 back in the day). Twice a week brings $300+ a month. Genuinely good for you too. Look for Biolife, Biomat, or CSL plasma centers.
