Barred Owl at Gilliland Creek Trail

Barred Owl at Gilliland Creek Trail

My wife and I were birding/walking on Gilleland Creek Trail after last night's storm and this barred owl (with breakfast!) landed in the tree in front of us and stared right at us for a minute before taking off!

EDIT: Gilleland Creek Trail, with an "e"!

I have a specific use case and wanted to see what everyone does: we bird around town, going to parks, ponds, trails, etc usually within 15 mins of us. Right now I set my D500+500mm lens on a car seat, propped up on a backpack, and sort of cross my fingers. And when I'm at home, I sit the camera+lens on the lens foot on the kitchen table.

I use my camera almost daily, and like to have it handy for the backyard, or quick trips. What is everyone doing for this? Backpacks? Are there other options?

I want quick access, ease of getting to the car, but if I want to pull over because I see birds, easy to get to. So not looking for giant travel cases, etc. But want to worry less when its sitting in the car or by my desk.

Thanks for reading, and any advice!
