What do these lines do? They terminate to open air!

Where can I go to learn the details of what this thing does? A couple of its ports are tied together before going to a mini air filter, and then through the firewall. The lines Y off before the filter and the other part of the Y comes back to this device, but has nowhere to hook up to! I'm so confused. What the heck does this thing even do?

1985 300D OM617a Turbo Federal spec (I'm told)

What is this vacuum line? I thought it was part of the vcv valve, but after watching a few videos on it, I don't think it is. It is directly behind the vcv valve (is that redundant?). It goes through the firewall and holds no vacuum.

I'm having terrible transmission flaring and shifting at weird points. (ie. At a stoplight, after it turns green, I need to almost floor the accelerator pedal spool the transmission all the way up to 4000 before the car will start to move.) If I were to test the line going down to the vacuum modulator, where would I find it? It is impossible to trace.

It is near the firewall, connected to a banjo bolt style connection. I'm guessing it's the exhaust manifold (but I really don't know for certain). Anyhow, the clear line was broken just above the connection point. I broke it off entirely and slipped a rubber vacuum line connector over it.

It did NOT have an effect on the transmission flaring and weird shifting issue I am trying to fix....
