vacation/time off culture? (carpenter apprentice, 1st year)
hi everyone! i'm about to start my union carpentry apprenticeship. (i'm in vegas btw, lmk if any other locals want to connect!)
i'm transitioning from a corporate job into carpentry and curious about time off requests and the culture around that. people at the union have been pretty vague about how this goes, they said you just give your foreman enough notice. wanted to get other ppl's opinions:
do you guys have issues with requesting time off?
do you have any experiences w foremen that are weirdly resentful about it?
how often do you take vacation? what is considered a "reasonable" duration?
how do you deal with calling off when you're sick or injured?
any general advice around work/life balance?
also want to clarify although i'm sure most of you understand already - not asking these questions bc i'm "lazy" or "not willing to work hard". i've worked enough manual labor jobs in the past to know that breaks and vacations are absolutely necessary for your overall health and longevity and that no job in the world is worth burning out completely.
TIA!
