2026 SXP HEV - Using Mechanical Key to open the door - see what happens!

I simulated a key fob battery dead or iPhone battery dead (Digital Key). Here's what happened:

  • Removed the mechanical key cover on the driver's side door handle
  • Used the mechanical key to open the door
  • Alarm goes on loud

If this was a true emergency to open the door with the mechanical key and the alarm goes off, what is the next step? Note that this was a simulation while at home and the car in the garage. After the alarm went off, I rushed inside and got the Key Fob and pressed the door open button, which reset the alarm! What it I'm at a Walmart parking lot with either the Key Fob battery or my iPhone's battery (with the Digital Key) dies? What would I do then in a real life scenario?

How to increase the Auto-Lock timeout on iPhone?

I have an app on my iPhone which I always want to be on the screen longer than the maximum timeout of 5 minutes on my iPhone when I’m driving my car. Before I drive off, I always plug my iPhone for CarPlay and charging so there’s no worry of draining the battery. I looked at my iPad and the max timeout is 15 minutes! Is there a trick to increase the Auto-Lock timeout of an iPhone to more than 5 minutes? TIA.

Does the Digital Key use NFC or BLE?

Two days ago, I activated Digital Key on my iPhone (iOS 26.4.2) for my 2026 SXP HEV. Now that I have this on my iPhone, I leave my bulky key fob at home and I now depend on my iPhone's Digital Key. Whenever I drive out, I always have my iPhone in my back pocket and open/close the door normally as if I have the key fob with me. The door always open/close with the normal hand gesture on the door handle - grab the inside to open and touch the outside to close. This morning, I saw "Sportage Digital Key" in "My Devices" on the BlueTooth settings on my iPhone. So I thought maybe the digital key actually uses BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) instead of NFC because NFC's effective distance is only 1.5 inches or less. With the phone in my back pocket, NFC will not be able to communicate with the car!

The reason why I discovered the "Sportage Digital Key" Bluetooth entry in my iPhone's Bluetooth settings is because this morning, I was going to drive off to run some errands. I had my Powerbeats Pro headset on and when I grabbed the inside of the door handle to open the door, it didn't open; grabbed the inside of the door handle again, it didn't open! So I took out my iPhone from my back pocket and looked at the Bluetooth setting and there it was - "Sportage Digital Key"! So I disconnected the Powerbeats Pro from my iPhone and force connected the "Sportage Digital Key". Success - I was able to open the door!

What's your thought about this? I'm at home now and I notice that the Digital Key is always "Connected"!
