NBD! ALR5

I can’t wait to get out and about. I’m coming from a fitness bike (Verve 2) and I am looking forward to the upgrade!

Hey everyone, looking for some input on my first dedicated gravel bike. I’m currently riding a Trek Verve 2 and I'm ready to upgrade to something that can handle more adventure.

Budget: ~$2,000

Contenders: Trek Checkpoint ALR 5 vs. Cannondale Topstone 2

My Priorities:

  • Relaxed Geometry: I'm coming from a hybrid, so I want a comfortable, more upright position for long days in the saddle.
  • Climbing Ability: I need solid "granny gears" to help get me up steep grades comfortably.
  • Touring/Bikepacking: I plan on doing some light bike touring in the future, so mounting points and stability under load are big factors.

For those who have owned or ridden both, which do you think fits these priorities best? Also, any thoughts on the 1x vs. 2x gearing setups on these specific models for someone who spends a lot of time grinding uphill?

Lastly, are there any other bikes in the $2k range I should be looking at that fit this criteria?

Thanks in advance!
