This came up for me on a recent trip, and I keep thinking about it.

I was talking to a few people in a hostel/common area, and someone joked that they “hate tourists.” Then five minutes later we were all comparing places we had visited, where we ate, what streets were worth walking, what museums were overrated, etc.

Basically tourist stuff.

It made me realize how many people try to separate themselves from the word “tourist,” even when they are literally visiting for a few days and doing the same things everyone else does.

I understand not wanting to be the annoying kind of tourist. Nobody wants to be the person blocking the sidewalk, treating locals like background characters, or acting like a city exists only for Instagram.

But I’m starting to think the word itself gets blamed for the behavior.

To me, “tourist” just means you’re a guest somewhere. The important part is whether you’re respectful, curious, and aware that people actually live there.

Maybe the problem is not tourists.

Maybe it’s entitled visitors.

Has anyone else noticed this attitude while traveling?

Let's say you're booking a tour, hotel, or car rental and the provider offers a significant discount (20-30%) just for contacting them directly via WhatsApp to confirm the booking instead of using the main platform.

Would you take the time to do it, or is it too much hassle? Just curious to see what most people prefer!

Hi everyone — I’m building Tourist.com, a travel directory where local guides, tour operators and small travel businesses can get discovered by travelers directly.

No commission, no booking fees, no marketplace cut.

You can create a free listing, add your tour or service, set your own discount if you want, and travelers contact you directly by WhatsApp, email, phone or your own website.

It’s especially useful if you’re a:

  • tour guide
  • local experience provider
  • boat rental
  • food tour
  • transfer service
  • small hotel / guesthouse
  • activity operator

We’re currently opening free listings for travel businesses here:
https://partners.tourist.com

Would love feedback from people who run tours or work in travel — what would make a listing like this actually useful for you?
