Why you're not being invited and what to do about it.
This topic has been done to death but the conversation is ever-living, with numerous Youtube videos, posts complaining on reddit and discord discussions.
"Why is my 3300 IO rogue not being invited to +12s? These meta chasers man!"
"I have 6/9 HC why am I not being invited to this group?"
If you are one of these people and you would like to spend less time in LFG, listen up.
Does WoW have a toxic, gatekeeping community?
Short answer, yes.
Long answer, no, not really. Of course WoW has toxic, gatekeeping players. Anyone who has done Mythic+ or raiding for more than 10 minutes will have experienced them. But we're not here to talk about the exceptions but the community as a whole.
There are many videos and reddit posts on why the WoW community is so toxic and wrong for not inviting you to their key. However, as someone who has run their own keys and raids for thousands of hours over the last few expansions, I can tell you there is almost always a reason.
Why am I not getting invited?
There are numerous factors as to why you aren't getting invited.
Composition
The big one. People blame meta for your 280ilv rogue not getting invited to a +12, but in the majority of cases this is the real reason. Composition matters much more than people realise and people who push high keys will have a very good knowledge of what classes work with eachother.
Sometimes, the reason classes are invited over other so much is because of their place in your composition, rather than their meta. Some classes or specs just unfortunately don't bring a lot to the table.
Firstly, you need certain dispel types. If you're running POS and you don't have a curse dispel, you're in for a bad time. If you're running 3 melee DPS with no ranged kicks in MC you're in for a bad time.
Secondly, you have CRs. Only some classes have CR. If you aren't one of these and are not being invited to a group with a Monk, Priest and 2 mages, then this is probably the reason why. Yes, everyone can use the CR item but its very difficult in many scenarios and can lead to a lost key.
The most obvious one is lust. Every* group needs a class with Bloodlust. If the group already has 4 people in it and none of them have lust, your rogue doesn't stand much chance.
You also have group buffs. People are unlikely to want to double dip on group buffs by inviting, for example, 2 druids to the group. Each class brings it's own strengths and by inviting 2 of the same you're missing out on what could be crucial DPS.
Then, you have utility. Some people have a route in mind, this might involve a warlock gate, a monk ring, a priest soothe e.t.c. You also have dungeons like Seat of the Triumvirate which have lots of snare removals needed where you might have to invite a Monk, Paladin or Shaman, or a class with lots of personal snare removals.
Take Chimaerus mythic for example. This be done with a full group of melees with no ranged kick and no DKs but I sure as hell am going to make sure that the group has 2 DKs and lots of mages.
Also, there aren't many tanks in the game. If there is a group with 1 healer and 2 DPS, they're likely to wait for a tank before inviting the last, because many tanks queue with a DPS friend.
Can these dungeons and raids be timed / completed without a perfect comp? Absolutely. Are people going to invite you and make their experience much less enjoyable and less likely to succeed? Absolutely not.
There are people better than you in queue
If I list a +10 WRS I will have 100 applicants within minutes. In that list of 100 applicants will be 10 people who are 3700, 10 people who are 3600, 10 people who are 3500, 10 people who are 3400 e.t.c.
Are you, on your 270 ilv 3139 IO rogue, good enough to do a +10? Absolutely. Am I going to invite you over the resil 19 mage with 287 ilv and 9/9M? No.
This problem has been made worse by the introduction of bonus rolls and vault. High level players need to grind 10s or 12s for crests, vault slots and to use their bonus rolls for Mythic gear. This makes it much harder for players who should be able to get into a +10, to do so.
When I'm running +18s and +19s, I am looking for a player who I can trust. That means you need to have timed a +19 and have resil 18s. If you don't have this, how do I know that you're going to be able to do my +19?
The reality is that DPS are not applying into a vacuum. You are not being compared against the dungeon requirement; you are being compared against every other DPS in the queue. Being good enough to time the key does not mean you are the best choice available.
Don't worry, there's an easy solution.
Group title
Read the group title. If it says “reclear”, they probably do not want progression players. If it says “push”, they are not looking for someone who has barely timed the level below. If it says “weekly”, they may care more about safety than speed.
Apply to groups where your character actually matches what the leader is advertising.
Don't waste your time applying to "CE only" Mythic Chimaerus with 1/9 HC, 259 ilv and no main. Yes, this happens A LOT and I bet you the people out there complaining are also doing this.
Logs
If you aren't aware of the website warcraftlogs and you plan on doing high level endgame content, you need to be.
This website is a recording of all of your past runs, raids and Mythic+, and your performance in each of them.
When people are inviting to their raid, they are most probably going to check your logs. When I'm creating a heroic raid, I can't tell you the amount of people that apply with logs in the single digits.
You can tell me I'm elitist and toxic for not inviting you, but I do not have to invite you to my raid if you cannot be bothered to learn your class and the raid mechanics.
I would say that 50+% of the people who queue to my heroic raids have grey parses. This is obviously because the people with high parses are in guilds or not bothering to reclear heroic, but doing 35k DPS on a boss fight just simply isn't good enough.
How do I get invited then?
Firstly, don't waste your time applying over and over to keys which are probably not going to invite you. If you're playing a warrior, look for comps that already have melee classes to go phys comp. If you're playing an Aug evoker, don't try and queue for a key that already has one.. (yes, I see this all the time). Check the composition, you can see it when you hover over the queue. Learn what utility is needed for a dungeon. If they don't have it, apply to a different group that you're more likely to get into.
Secondly, run your own key. If you've finished your 16s and want to start your 17s, you're going to have a very bad time getting into a key. Unless you're meta of course, then go right ahead and skip this whole section. Most people will not invite you to a +17 until you have timed at least one. It's definitely possible but as a Holy Priest, I have spent upwards of 4 hours straight in queue waiting for a +18 to invite me because I was too lazy to run my own 17 SOTT.
I always run my own key until I have 3-4 completed in that tier, then start applying. Suddenly, it takes 10 minutes instead of 4 hours to get in.
If you're applying for a +17 but haven't even timed a +14 in that key and your highest is a +16 POS, you're not going to be invited. And if you are invited, it probably isn't a group you want to be invited to. List your own key, invite players, time it and then the world is your oyster.
Yes, the real advise is joining a guild and making friends, but not everyone can or wants to do that, and you will be spending a lot of time in LFG if you don't.
Additionally, don't try and queue for +10s and +12s on a wednesday. On reset, people will be trying to use their bonus rolls. If you're struggling with these keys, list your own and watch the 285 ilv 4k rating chads carry you for a change.
Lastly, learn your rotation people. I started playing MW monk for the first time in my entire life yesterday. I went to wowhead, looked up a rotation guide, googled a youtube video on M+ and Raid rotations and then went ingame to practice.
41 real time and 10 in game hours after clicking "Create character", I am now timing +13s and Mythic raiding.
I started out in NM, got some green and blue parses, looked at what I was doing wrong and what the top players are doing, fixed some mistakes. Then I went to HC, got all blue and purple parses including some orange parses for ilv, looked what I was doing wrong and fixed it. Now I'm raiding mythic on the 2nd day of MW in my life and Im 2nd on HPS doing 120k on Chimaerus Mythic pulls (whilst simultaneously failing mechanics because Im dumb and dont know how to multitask).
Point is, with a little bit of effort, you can do this too (including the failing of mechanics bit). Watch a guide then run NM and try to beat your own logs. Then do it on HC. Having all of your logs at 60+ will make getting into groups infinitely easier and when you're in them, you won't be a burden.
I am much more likely to invite someone with 3/9 HC and purple logs over someone who is 9/9 HC with grey logs. If you're not being invited, it might not always be a "5 years experience required for entry level position" scenario.
M+ players, this applies to you too. People inviting to +18s will absolutely check your raid logs. If you cannot beat a tank in a Heroic raid, you aren't very likely to be blasting in the key. Also, there are M+ logs and people can, and will, look at your DPS, deaths and interrupts in past runs before inviting you.
TL/DR please?
You’re usually not being declined because of toxic gatekeeping.
You’re being declined because there are 40 other applicants, some with better score, better gear, better logs, better utility, or a better fit for the comp.
Being good enough is not the same as being the best option.
Want more invites? Apply smarter, fix your logs, learn your spec, run your own key, and stop queuing five levels above what you’ve actually proven.
And if you don't want to follow this advise, stop blaming a toxic community because it's you that's making it one.
