Some of these individuals would approach within a few feet, watching closely and reacting to small movements. Completely different behavior compared to the more distant, cautious pairs I usually see.
This community is dedicated to the common raven (Corvus corax) – one of the most intelligent and culturally significant birds on Earth.
Here you can share:
• Field observations and encounters
• Behavior, vocalizations, and ecology
• High-quality photos and video
• Research and natural history
• Mythology, symbolism, and cultural references spanning thousands of years
The raven in this post was photographed on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, shortly before the 2025 fires.
It walked up to the spigot, looked at me, and rubbed its beak along the handle – over and over – clearly focused on the mechanism. It wasn’t random. It was trying to get the water turned on.
That moment changed how I saw them. Not just as birds, but as aware, problem-solving animals interacting directly with people and the environment. It’s what pushed me to start photographing birds and paying real attention.
This community exists because of moments like that.
