Gail didn’t get it
I really loved how Jessica’s character was fleshed out in Spawn’s Universe. They introduced her as a real person - a mother who sacrificed a happy, normal life with her daughter and mom just to keep them safe. I haven’t seen that edgy vibe from her in years; she actually felt more cold and intellectual lately.
But Gail writes her as if she’s just walking around being tough and bitchy. The way Simone doubles down on those misogyny comments in the first issue makes it feel like we're headed for another True Detective Season 4 situation sacrificing character depth and plot complexity just to push certain commentary (yes, Gail, we get it).
I’m worried about this mini-series wasting its potential. It’s Jessica’s first solo run, and she has the chance to be explored much more deeply here than in the team-up setting of The Scorched.
Going back to my thoughts on the character and Spawn’s Universe...
Gail just didn’t get it.
And she deserves a way better artist. In my opinion
