PSA: Offering Less than List Price

For some reason this season I've been getting offers for 1/5-1/8 of the list price. Does this work for people who attempt this? I feel like this is inherently trying to be rude, implying that I've grossly overpriced something. For more respectable offers I'll respond with nty or try to work out a deal. For these 1/5 offers I've just been replying with no.

I'd like to think I'm not known for being an over-pricer and if I ever do get out of line, the price always gets lowered until it sells. I virtually always check the market and try to undercut or match all current listings when posting.

Advice:

  • If you're wanting to offer less than 1/2 of the list price, then odds are you're not going to reach a deal, and it's a lose/lose situation where you both waste your time. I suggest just moving along. I don't think you're going to shame them into lowering their price.
  • If you want to lowball, then you can offer 1/2 and possibly work your way towards somewhere between half and the list price, but you could also turn the person off by trying to get an item for 50% off.
  • A more consistent method to get a deal is to offer 3/4 of the list price, possibly getting it for that, or working towards somewhere between 3/4 and list price.
  • As always, it's probably best to not offer at all for those who list items for offer unless it's an uncommon item you truly need.
