Built over an old prison site, Europe’s last great stone church.

Home of the Tredennick family, a wealthy landowner of the area in south Donegal, it was destroyed in 1944 for the widening of the river Erne for the dam at Cathleen falls in ballyshannon. Only the entrance gate stands. And they didn’t end up flooding the castle land, they overestimated the water level.
One of my favourite neo-gothic buildings in Ireland, this church stands 300ft and houses the largest bell in Europe.
Tilts a few degrees, in the past it was more severe so in 2002 it was fixed to 0° but still continued tilting.
Lovely house it’s a hotel, and the gardens is gorgeous. Truly a hidden gem in the valley around Letterkenny.
Any mackerel or good fish about in Lough swilly lately, planning to go soon on my boat. Maybe it’s too early?
