Wiring EVSE (duh) question/discussion
I am looking to purchase an EV within the next few months and looking to hardwire an EVSE in my detached garage.
I have a couple of thoughts and want to hash it out with others that can help me pick a path.
I currently have a 2 pole 50A breaker in my main panel and I think 8 gauge (maybe be 6) wire running out to the garage into a smaller panel that has a 2 pole 20A breaker for an air compressor and another 20A (maybe 2, been a while since I looked in it) for outlets, lights, opener, etc.
The air compressor isn't used very often.
So the 2 options I am thinking....
leave what is there as is and run a new 2 pole 60A with 6 gauge to the garage to a disconnect to the EVSE. If I understand correctly, the disconnect may not technically be required but good to have close to the EVSE. There is an empty 1" buried conduit running to the garage. <--leaning this way
upgrade the existing to a larger breaker with larger wire running out to the garage and then a 60A in panel in the garage with the 6 gauge to the EVSE.
If it matters, the EVSE I will be using is a Ubiquiti UniFi EV Station Pro.
