Wiring EVSE (duh) question/discussion

I am looking to purchase an EV within the next few months and looking to hardwire an EVSE in my detached garage.
I have a couple of thoughts and want to hash it out with others that can help me pick a path.
I currently have a 2 pole 50A breaker in my main panel and I think 8 gauge (maybe be 6) wire running out to the garage into a smaller panel that has a 2 pole 20A breaker for an air compressor and another 20A (maybe 2, been a while since I looked in it) for outlets, lights, opener, etc.
The air compressor isn't used very often.

So the 2 options I am thinking....

  1. leave what is there as is and run a new 2 pole 60A with 6 gauge to the garage to a disconnect to the EVSE. If I understand correctly, the disconnect may not technically be required but good to have close to the EVSE. There is an empty 1" buried conduit running to the garage. <--leaning this way

  2. upgrade the existing to a larger breaker with larger wire running out to the garage and then a 60A in panel in the garage with the 6 gauge to the EVSE.

If it matters, the EVSE I will be using is a Ubiquiti UniFi EV Station Pro.

Buying advice?

I'm looking at getting my first EV and looking at an SS. I've been researching between here, fb, google, chatgpt, YT, and all the other usual places. That said, everyone has an opinion and they all conflict.
I figured it was time to make a post asking for some owner feedback, both good and bad and things to look out for.
Leasing is out since I live in Chicago. :/ I will be charging at home with a hardwired L2.
TIA
