49ers Draft Proficiency
I've seen a lot of takes, mostly bad, about how the 49ers Draft. Sitting here in the middle of the night wide awake, I wondered, can you quantify how good a draft is for a team? I determined that yes, you can.
Sports Reference assigns a value to a player based on their performance for a year, calling it Approximate Value (AV) . This value ranges from 0 to the high twenties. Further, they track how much AV a player accumulated for the tram that drafted them (DrAV) So, I totalled the DrAV of all players for all teams dating back to 2017, Shanahans first year. Here are the results:
- BUF 919
- BAL 876
- IND 859
- SFO 797
- GNB 791
- TAM 764
- LAC 733
- KAN 726
- CIN 722
- DET 707
So, how bad does SF suck at drafting? They don't. They're, by this standard, a top 5 team.
