people’s tone of voice?

I’ve been trying to figure what this is actually called. but this group seems like the closest I can get to an answer. What’s the name of the study of someone’s tone of voice? Not an accent per se and not slang. I’m meaning when someone drags out particular letters or is nasally or has a slightly melodic tone to their speech (or specific words).

All of this being a subconscious individual practice (like just how they were born sounding) this again is outside of a regional, national or familial levels. Hopefully that makes sense. Think how in music you can identify something specifically by saying vibrato.

Theres an actress that has a very particular voice. Not fran drescher status but similar in the sense that, THATS JUST HOW SHE SOUNDS. What’s the study of that called? Help is appreciated.

NYCB - What makes me never want to return.

So without fail every time I think, “Im not sure if I want to go back” (for a while). The coughing. I mean this must be a common occurrence everywhere but it’s so distracting. I’ve seen pieces where there was damn near a melodic pattern of coughing and throat clearing in the audience. I’m sitting there thinking to myself what the actual fuck. Like is this a flash mob cough crew or something?

What sucks is I really deeply enjoy ballet. To know I have to expect constant coughing, shuffling, throat clearing, talking, and the occasional cell phone rings… really sucks. I know the body has to function, but you’d think during intermission people would get water or something.

Dancers, are you able to ignore all of this while on stage? Are you used to it? I can catch myself feeling worried, like if you’ll get pulled out of your element.

Edit: For the involuntary cough attacks people are mentioning. ok? I really do understand. But I would leave the theatre. I wouldn’t have a cough attack in the middle of a performance. Even if I was with someone who was going through that. I’d suggest leaving and watching outside, you can rejoin the next piece.
