[Review] I tested 5 sunscreens on my oily skin every day for 3 weeks — here's which ones actually stayed matte

Quick background: I have oily, acne-prone skin. My T-zone is shiny by 10am if I use the wrong products. I've been burned by sunscreens that felt fine in the morning and looked like an oil slick by lunch.

So I spent 3 weeks testing 5 different sunscreens — same routine, same weather, same time of day for evaluation. Here's the honest breakdown:

---

What I was testing for:
• How shiny is my T-zone by noon?
• Did it cause any new breakouts?
• How does it wear under minimal makeup?
• Does it leave a white cast?

---

🥇 La Roche-Posay Anthelios Clear Skin SPF 60
The winner. Oil-absorbing technology actually works — I stayed matte until nearly 1pm (which is unheard of for my skin). No white cast, no breakouts. Slightly thick on application but blends out fast. Worth every penny.

🥈 EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46
My second favorite. Has niacinamide in it which noticeably calmed my redness over 2 weeks. Doesn't control oil quite as well as LRP but it's lighter and works better if you have sensitive/acne-prone skin with redness.

🥉 Supergoop! Unseen SPF 40
Great under makeup — seriously feels like a primer. But if your skin is very oily, it's not enough on its own. Best if you're doing a full makeup look.

  1. Neutrogena Clear Face SPF 50
Solid budget option. Got shiny faster than the top two but no breakouts and widely available at CVS/Walgreens. Good starter sunscreen.

  2. COSRX Aloe Sun Cream SPF 50+
Nice and lightweight but not matte at all. Better for combination or mildly oily skin. Not for very oily T-zones.

---

Key things I learned:
• "Oil-free" on the label ≠ matte finish. Check for silica or oil-absorbing ingredients.
• Skipping moisturizer makes oily skin WORSE — your skin produces more oil to compensate.
• Application matters — pat don't rub, and wait 2-3 mins before makeup.

Happy to answer questions if you're trying to figure out which one fits your skin type!

I kept seeing both azelaic acid and salicylic acid recommended for acne on this sub and I genuinely couldn't figure out which one I should try. So I went deep into the research. Here's what I found — hope this helps someone else.

---

The short version:

• Salicylic acid (BHA) = better for blackheads, clogged pores, oily skin
• Azelaic acid = better for inflammatory acne, redness, dark spots, sensitive skin

They work through completely different mechanisms, which is why one might work for you and the other won't.

---

How salicylic acid works:

It's oil-soluble, which means it can actually penetrate inside the pore and dissolve the buildup causing blackheads and whiteheads. Great if you have congested, oily skin. It also exfoliates the surface. Downside: can be drying and stripping if your barrier is already compromised.

---

How azelaic acid works:

This one targets acne from multiple angles simultaneously — it kills acne-causing bacteria (P. acnes), reduces inflammation, normalizes cell turnover, AND fades post-acne dark spots. It's also one of the very few actives that's pregnancy-safe.

The trade-off? It's slower. Salicylic acid can flatten a pimple fast. Azelaic acid builds results over 4–12 weeks.

---

Who should use which:

Salicylic acid → you have blackheads, congested pores, very oily skin, want faster surface results

Azelaic acid → you have inflammatory/hormonal acne, dark spots post-breakout, sensitive skin, rosacea, or you're pregnant

---

Can you use both?

Yes, but not in the same session. Many people use salicylic acid 2x/week as a targeted exfoliant, and azelaic acid daily as their main treatment. They're not redundant — they complement each other.

---

I found this really helpful when I was trying to build my routine. Anyone else use one or both? Which worked better for your skin type?

I used to skip sunscreen because every single one broke me out.

I have acne-prone, oily skin and literally every SPF I tried either clogged my pores, made me greasy by 10am, or left a weird white cast… so I just stopped using it.

Worst mistake.

My acne marks got darker, breakouts got worse, and nothing in my routine was working.

After a LOT of trial and error, I finally found a few sunscreens that actually don’t clog pores and work for acne-prone skin:

• EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 – lightweight, has niacinamide, didn’t irritate my skin
• La Roche-Posay Anthelios Clear Skin SPF 60 – great for oily skin in hot weather
• Neutrogena Clear Face SPF 55 – budget-friendly and decent for daily use
• Supergoop Unseen SPF 40 – works really well under makeup

Biggest lesson: switching to oil-free + non-comedogenic formulas changed everything.

If you have acne-prone skin — what sunscreen a
