Jabra Evolve3 85 - Extremely frustrating microphone breakup at random moments during teams and Zoom calls - getting desperate
Hi there,
Since yesterday I have a brand new Jabra Evolve3 85. Firmware fully updated. The mic works perfectly at the start of every call, but after a period of silence (e.g. I'm listening to others speak for 1-2 minutes), when I start talking again my voice sounds like a terrible internet connection to everyone on the call — choppy, cutting in and out. Audio output (what I hear) remains perfect throughout. Only fix is starting a new call entirely.
This happens on both Microsoft Teams and Zoom, which rules out any app-specific issue.
My setup:
- Lenovo laptop, Windows 11 Enterprise 23H2
- Jabra Evolve3 85, latest firmware
- Jabra Link 390 dongle (included in box, pre-paired)
Everything I have tried, in order:
1. Switched from built-in Bluetooth to the included Jabra Link 390 dongle This was the most promising fix — bypasses the Windows Intel Bluetooth stack entirely. Disconnected the headset from native Bluetooth, connected exclusively via the Link 390 dongle. Still happens.
2. Teams noise suppression → OFF First thing I tried. No change whatsoever.
3. Disconnected all other USB devices from docking station Thought USB bandwidth congestion or RF interference from USB 3.0 ports
4. Disabled ANC on the headset during calls Thought ANC mic recalibration might be interfering with the voice mic. No change.
5. Checked mmsys.cpl (classic Sound panel) Looked for the Jabra appearing twice (A2DP + HFP profiles) to disable the Hands-Free Telephony entry. The Jabra only appears once — even with "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices" both enabled. No duplicate HFP entry to disable.
6. Intel Bluetooth adapter power management → disabled Device Manager → Bluetooth → Intel adapter → Properties → Power Management → unchecked "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." No change. Also confirmed the Intel Bluetooth driver is already the latest available.
7. Updated Jabra Evolve3 85 firmware via Jabra Direct Updated to latest firmware. No change.
never connected to the headset. Not the cause.
What I know for certain based on all of the above:
- Problem is exclusively with the mic stream
- Happens via both native Bluetooth AND the dedicated Link 390 dongle → rules out Windows/Intel stack entirely
- Happens on Teams AND Zoom → rules out app-level bug I guess
- Triggered often by silence → something changes in the mic stream when there's no voice activity
- 5 other Bluetooth headsets work perfectly on the same machine
My current theory: This is a firmware bug specific to the Evolve3 85 where the mic transmission throttles or enters a low-activity state during silence, and fails to cleanly recover when voice activity resumes. Given the dongle rules out the host Bluetooth stack, the issue has to be inside the headset itself. But if that is the case - others should be expertincing these issues as well ?
Has anyone else experienced this? Any fixes I haven't tried? Bit frustrating because when it does work - the headset is great
