Los Sueños vs. Guanacaste! which side of Costa Rica wins for a luxury stay?

Both are stunning Both are world-class But they offer very different experiences.

Los Sueños / Herradura gives you a gated private-resort feel marina access, rainforest backdrop, deep-sea fishing right from the dock, and some of the most exclusive private villas in the country. It's quieter, more contained, and frankly more secure.

Guanacaste gives you the classic Costa Rica postcard dry tropical landscape, iconic beach clubs, a buzzing expat scene, and easier direct flight access from the US.

So which do you prefer for a highend trip and why?

My family is planning a trip to Costa Rica and we want to make sure it's as comfortable as possible for our older relatives. Costa Rica is incredible, but between the long transfer times, unpaved roads, and humid weather, it can be physically demanding if you're not prepared.

A few things we're already considering private transfers instead of shared shuttles, staying in one base location rather than moving around too much, and choosing accommodation that has everything onsite so there's no pressure to go out every day.

Would love to hear from anyone who's done this. Specifically curious about:

  • Which regions are easiest to navigate for older travelers?
  • Private villa vs resort which works better for comfort and accessibility?
  • Any transport tips for the Arenal or Pacific coast areas?

Costa Rica is one of those places that stays with you long after you leave.

Maybe it was the sound of howler monkeys waking you up in the morning. A stunning Pacific sunset. Your first time deep sea fishing. Or just the feeling of being completely off the grid in the middle of a rainforest.

Whatever it was we want to hear it.
