my boyfriends pc (runs windows, sorry im not very technical) has suddenly started acting weird.

he’s been playing games on it fine all evening, he powered it on again just now and before he could log in it rebooted by itself saying “your device ran into a problem and needs to restart”, and then it was fine for a couple minutes, then it did the same thing, but without the popup (just restarted with no “your device ran into a problem”). he’s checked the main problems it could be but it seems to be completely fine??
any ideas of what could have happened/be happening is greatly appreciated as we are both worried. thanks
