New pygmy corys. Are they happy?
Wanting some advice on these new pygmy corys I've acquired. I picked up the first group (7) from a LFS on Tuesday and put them into a pretty new tank (5 days old) that has filter media, plants and wood from an established tank. I have a betta male in there with them who aside from the first 10 minutes or so of curiosity has not bothered with these guys in the slightest. Tank has plants and areas of cover but I wouldn't consider it 'heavily' planted yet as most of the plants are still small and establishing.
Have been doing daily water tests and everything has been coming back good - ph 7, Gh 80ppm, kH 60 ppm, ammonia 0, nitrites 0, nitrates 20ppm. At first the corys seemed quite stressed and were glass surfing quite a bit which I put down to potentially the presence of the betta and that even though he wasn't showing interest in them his presence may have been enough to upset them. The next day was sort of the same but there was definitely less glass surfing and more curiosity in there surroundings but they hadn't touched the sinking wafer bits I'd put in there for them the night before at all.
After reading a bit more deeper into forums I saw it suggested to have a group of 10+ for a more healthy, happy and lively group so Thursday I went to our local Pets Domain (I live in Aus and this is a chain store) and brought 3 more to add to the group.
Over the last 24hrs I haven't seen these guys doing much of anything and I'm wondering if this is a sign of them being content and happy or if I should be worried about them. I tried feeding some frozen brine shrimp which I defrosted for them last night and dropped a couple in and even when the food was sitting on the ground right beside them they didn't even turn to nibble it at all. I haven't seen them eat anything (which i do understand can be normal) and for the most part whenever I am watching they all seem to just sit on the sand and not do anything. I see them go up to the surface for their air every now and again as corys do and occasionally they'll swim around a little, usually with just 1-3 at a time and the rest of the time they're pretty well spread through the tank just sitting around. It's not hiding because a couple of them i find sitting at the front corners where there is no cover at all.
Should I be worried that they are so stagnant? Is this a sign of them not being happy/ comfortable in their tank yet or is this fairly normal for them?
