What vehicle tows your trailer?
I just purchased a 1988 Bigfoot 17ft travel trailer, and I’m now shopping for a vehicle to tow her with. Dry weight is about 1800 lbs, wet is about 3000 lbs give or take. This is my first travel trailer, so I was wondering what other people use to tow theirs if yours has a similar weight. I’m also open to advice or suggestions!
I’m hoping to find something:
- for less than $10k
- with less than 150k miles
- newer than a 2008
- has a tow capacity of over 5000 lbs so not to put a huge strain on the engine
… which seems doable. I’ve been eyeing Nissan Armadas, Ford F150s, and even some Ford & Chevy cargo vans that already have tow hitches. I have seen the occasional Toyota Sequoia with slightly higher mileage, but I know these can easily break 300k miles.
I am slightly worried about MPG, of course— my current Subaru Forester gets excellent gas mileage, so going from getting 27 mpg to 13 (before towing) just hurts a bit.
Are there any vehicle options that I’m missing? Any advice? TIA!
