I've been using Nginx for a long time to reverse proxy a number of local servers.

Yesterday my Home Assistant server configuration stopped working while using the local FQDN with a 502 Bad Gateway. I changed to the IP in Nginx, and it started to work again.

I use Pihole for local DNS. Nginx, Pihole and HA are on Proxmox VMs.

I SSHed into the Nginx server. nslookup resolved the correct IP address for HA. I can ping both the FQDN and IP for HA from Nginx server. I tried Curl to both the FQDN and IP... and both work.

So, the Nginx server can see the home assistant server, but the reverse proxy only works using the IP address. I guess I'm ok with that as I don't expect to change the IP address any time soon, but why would this suddenly stop working?

I did change out my router and firewall (EdgrouterX to Unfi Gateway), but the server can still see the HA server. It seemed fine for a few days... and now it fails on the FQDN. Does Nginx use a different port/method for DNS than the underlying Linux server?

Questions:
- Will a Gateway like a 1G UCG-Ulta have any impact on my LAN? I do have VLANs, but the core traffic on the 2.5G network is client <-> NAS on same VLAN. Or is it just WAN/internet speed? Are the gateways with 2.5G ports important for intra-switch 2.5G traffic?

- If I am happy hosting the Controller on my Proxmox server, is there any value in the Cloud Gateways vs the UCG-Max/Ultra? I like low power and low heat.

I've had a stable ER-X -> US-8-60W (house) -> US-8-60W (office), APs on each with wired clients network for about 6 years. Two big factors are pushing me to an upgrade.

1 - I can now get 1GBs Down from Spectrum
2 - Upgraded Office LAN switches to 2.5G. Now I want to improve house LAN speeds.

The 2.5G in the office is for large media transfers with NAS on main editing workstation. I added the Flex 2.5G switches and that feels better already. Occasionally I'm in the house and transfer a photoshoot to the NAS in the office which is a slight bottleneck.

For the internet 1G upgrade, the ER-X becomes the potential bottleneck. I'm looking at UXG-Max (2.5G), UXG-Lite (1G), UCG-Ultra (1G) and UCG-Max (2.5G) as options.

I'm happy hosting my own cloud controller and like the philosophy of purpose built components and lower power/heat as they will be in wall cabinets.

- UXG-Max: 2.5G if that is important for LAN/VLAN speeds. Low power. Higher cost.
- UXG-Lite: Better prices and WAN is only 1G. Less heat.
- UCG-Ultra: Price is good. Is 1GB bad for LAN? Less heat.
- UCG-Max: 2.5G if it helps, but I don't do other services. Runs hotter. Expensive.

I'm mixed on having the Controller on the router vs my server. The backups seems to work well and network doesn't use that much of the CPU.

I'm not sure if the 2.5G is worth it if the WAN is only 1G. I'm looking to upgrade form 600/20 to 1000/40 and I don't expect fiber or faster at my place for a long, long time.
