Old orange man

We just recently rescued this sweet stray orange tom along with a feisty little Tortie kitten and they're already best buds. Everyone that's met him has said "You've got a story to tell!" and him and his little buddy are adjusting so well to indoor life! He's the most gentle giant despite the RBF and it melts my heart. Say hi, Rajah!

Newly adopted cat's strange claws

Hello,

I just adopted two cats a few weeks ago. Both of them were strays that were trapped so not much is known about them and I'm still getting them used to humans, but I noticed that one of them (a senior cat) has strange looking cakey front claws on only one of his paws. The other paw is completely normal. I'm going to take him to the vet in any case but am looking for any advice beforehand. Is it just caked on litter? could it be a fungal infection? he's not scratching his scratchers enough? He's not acting like he's in pain or limping so I'm just not sure, and he won't let me hold him long enough to try to scrape it off. Should I make him endure me trying to scrape it off anyways? Any advice or suggestion is welcomed, thanks!
