Carrier lock on personal phone. Necessary to have eSIM?

I was looking to install an eSIM for my trip to China in October, but I realized that T-Mobile has locked my device and can only be unlocked if I pay off the phone. Not really looking to do that at this time.

I understand T-Mobile provides international roaming plans that include China. Thought I’ve heard having a Chinese phone number through eSIM may make things easier and apps like AMap grant more user access. If I just go with T-Mobiles international roaming and install a VPN, should that be good enough to get around in China? Would there be any complications that could arise with not having a Chinese number?

TWOV Check: USA => Seoul (5 hour layover) => Shanghai => Chongqing => Chengdu => Hong Kong => Taipei(2 hour layover) => USA

Hi all, I wanted to make sure my TWOV itinerary is valid and will face minimal issues when arriving and departing from China.

My simplified itinerary is USA => China => Hong Kong => USA. My arrival and departure flights both have layovers in different jurisdictions as shown in the title (Korea and Taiwan)

Within mainland China, I will be flying from Shanghai to Chongqing, then bullet train from Chongqing to Chengdu. Exiting mainland China via flight from Chengdu to Hong Kong.

Thank you! If there is anything I need to be prepared for beforehand when passing through check-in and immigration, please let me know.
