Never saw one before.... i thought we didn't have !?

We bought a house (built in 60') and this is attached on the ceiling. This area is middle of the house , above there an attic with ductwork and nothing else (not habitable).

Wondered what is it before we take it out...

We think it was some kind of hook to hang something?
