So I was just nearly knocked off my bike after an SUV driver (who else?) ran a stop sign and nearly hit me. This was in a protected cycle lane, but it doesn't provide any protection at intersections.

Needless to say I yelled at him, letting loose several expletives.

His excuse was that he didn't see me. Admittedly, I wasn't wearing hi-vis, but it was broad daylight on a perfectly fine blue day. He didn't see me because he didn't look.

In any case, that's irrelevant, because it was a STOP sign. You MUST stop, even if you think it's clear.
